What investment? We've pumped millions of dollars into these companies to get them to expand their networks to rural communities, and they've just shoved it up their ass like a cash enema. They're definitely not spending their own money on improving services.
The only systems they're incentivized to improve are the ones that funnel our cash into their pockets.
It's not that hard to throw up a website that allows user uploads. The community can replace iN in a heartbeat. They bought into their brand as the important thing, and not the contributors, and now they're probably going to slowly waste away.
Speaks more to what I'm seeing in Halifax, too. We've been flooded with Teslas in the last couple of years, and it's not beat up Civics they're replacing.
NodeBB. It's a fairly popular webforum, but ActivityPub support is fairly new. It's really something else to see the Fediverse through a the lens of the old Internet.
Yes, yes, clearly we haven't given the rich enough power. If only we gave them more, then they'd solve all our problems! Let's abdicate our responsibility to each other even harder!
Would you be surprised to learn that business is actually a network of cargo cults, where the thing they're trying to superficially mimic is other businesses that don't know why they're doing what they're doing?
I work for an online edtech company that saw massive organic growth during lockdowns, and has been chasing that dragon since lockdowns were lifted. They spent millions expanding their workforce at the time, while they severely pared down their school outreach team. They made multiple moves that only made sense if you assume lockdowns would last forever.
I raised this with management a couple of times, and their only response was "everyone else was doing it, too".
So, there's this issue that there is a significant fraction of indigenous people who aren't interested in being called Canadian, in no small part because every interaction indigenous groups have had with white Canadian institutions have been done on the white Canadians' terms.
White Canadians lobbying them to get on board the Canadian Unity train is... just more of that.
White Canadian political leaders stepping all over indigenous land and consultation rights is just more of that.
Nothing about the current discourse around national unity and inclusion is signalling that white Canada is looking for any kind of real partnership with indigenous people. It all just screams of an opportunistic shot at forcing indigenous people to get on board and shut up.
Laziness has ALWAYS been derided as a character flaw.
This is a nonsequitor. Masturbation has also long been vilified. Doesn't make it not pleasurable. In fact, many things that are pleasurable are framed as character flaws by people who believe they will benefit from your self-denial.
