  • I think to truly break out of US controlled operating systems is to be able to run the proprietary apps/programs, that people depend on, on an open source operating systems they don’t control.

While ideally people shouldn’t be dependent on this proprietary software, due to unchecked monopoly behavior, consumers don’t have many choices, especially in mobile.

There has been success with Valve and the Steam Deck. While they are still a US company, they have hugely pushed forward running Windows games on Linux to the point where you don’t need to use Windows unless you want to play games that require anti-cheat.

  • Don’t worry, Recall will record everything done on the Windows machine.

  • Are you moving to Europe or trying to find a job in Europe while living in the US?

I think moving to Europe is really the only option unless the EU company has a US entity.

  • Sounds like a fucking nightmare, but a wet dream to Big Tech.

  • Capitalism is causing massive wealth inequality.

  • I would expect a repair score to be about how easy it is to repair, can the battery be easily changed, is it glued down, etc.

  • Why is the energy usage so big and the repairability score so small?

These should be switched. Energy usage of the smartphone is less relevant, as it is a mobile device, so it is already designed to be energy efficient.

  • Android phones have objectively more spyware than Apple phones.

  • This is actually common in Germany. After you pay for your groceries at the checkout, there are bins for paper/cardboard and other packaging. Many people will unpack their food before taking it home.

I don’t do it because I want to read what is on the packaging, but I have definitely see some unpack a frozen pizza out of the box and just take it in the plastic wrapping.

  • CEO will come out and say employees are more productive when forced to work 5 days a week. When asked to see the data, they will say trust me, I’ve seen the internal studies from a Big Tech company. Same exact playbook as work from home.

  • Most interesting would be a forced sell of Android. Would all of the Google spyware be stripped out of Google’s Android distribution? Would we see more official distributions of Android without any Google software?

  • I would say it is one sided in that the user gets the same treatment/experience from either platform even though they are consider rivals and each company would argue they are different.

  • I would say iOS and Android.

Originally they were pretty different in terms of functionality and appearance. Android has improved a lot in terms of the user experience and UI, but also has become more locked down and user hostile. I would say that iOS has actually gotten worse in terms of bugs/reliability, and now Apple is relying on services and ads for new revenue. The user experience has suffered.

If you want a mobile phone/OS that respects user freedoms, agency and privacy, there is no consumer option. Both are filled with spyware/data collection from both the OS vendor and third party apps.

  • I wonder if they will implement the same malicious compliance as they did in the EU with the junk core technology fees and notarization requirements.

  • I believe Valve just has a flat hierarchy, but not worker owned.
