It's not even that much of a sacrifice. There are some modern 600s that weigh less than what a typical 70-200/2.8 does. Granted, they're on the darker side, but if you have the light (supposedly you will during a hike), you don't always need an f/4.
Weight aside, those took a lot of space too. Almost every CRT from that era was put in a desk corner, swivelled sideways, forcing you to turn sideways too - and many of those were 15-17". Now imagine 21...

Yep. And even if it wasn't, different brands are under no obligation to do the same thing - I'd argue that this is different from a keyboard for example where you'd want everyone to stick to QWERTY. The only thing I'd realistically expect to stay consistent is the controller across different generations of the same console - and most brands have done that.
This works for a tech demo if you want to show off a new rendering engine or a new GPU. But yeah, if you base the whole game around that, it's like those movies with more CGI than plot.
