  • Yes, I can attest to this from my own experience. I speak so much German all day every day that, when speaking to my Dutch friends and family, I sometimes start using false friends or even awkward sentence structure.

  • While asking an LLM can yield results, it may just as well kill your OS entirely. Consulting old forum posts or engaging with a supposedly snobbish in-group also has issues. I see your point.

    However, I believe the key drivers that make Linux more accessible for average users are the increasingly stable nature of out of the box style solutions like Mint, an ongoing trend to make applications browser based and therefore much easier to use across platforms and, finally, a real push by valve to finally break the gaming barrier.

  • I've moved my father to Softmaker's office suite. He's completely sold. They have the option of using a UI remarkably similar to the old 2003 Office look. He's been moaning about not being able to find anything ever since Microsoft moved away from that format. He's happy to have something he feels more comfortable with back.   • This has become increasingly easy in the Netherlands. A lot of people in my parents' generation has started using the app. It's now at a level (at least in the social circle of my parents), that everyone seems to use Signal. My father actually never made the switch. Signal is the very first chat app he's ever used. He used to rely on SMS and e-mail before that.

  • Much like fascism elsewhere, it's not going away with elections. There was still (just) enough institutional cohesion last time. Even then, it took Mike Pence to, probably for the first time in his life, do the right thing. No matter the "election" result, the current set of muppets is never going to give this power away peacefully. Just imagine VP Couchlover in the place of Mike Pence on that fateful day. We'd probably have gotten a coup right then and there.

    I recommend carpet bombing the entire country for a few years, either dropping two nukes on it or granting about a quarter of its territory to neighbouring countries (including ethnically cleansing those areas) as well as splitting the rest in half for a few decades, and finally keeping foreign troops around for the next 70 years and counting. It worked wonders for Japan and Germany, both of which have since become positive additions to the world community. Perhaps we should give that a try for the US? (this is obviously satire; I'm obviously not in favour of mass killings and ethnic cleansing...)

  • Bei der Statistik habe ich mich auch gewundert. Die Gesamtzahl der Erwerbstätigen hat zugenommen, auch durch Teilzeitarbeit vorher gar nicht Erwerbstätiger. Der beste Weg die Erwerbsquote von Eltern (meist Müttern) weiter zu erhöhen, ist die Schaffung eines Umfeldes, in dem (Vollzeit) Arbeit und Kind(er) funktionieren. Derzeit besteht diese Option kaum und mehr als Teilzeit ist oft aus tatsächlich existierenden Gründen nicht möglich.

    Das kostet aber Geld und Aufwand und wird daher nie passieren. Lieber nochmal Elterngeld kürzen, damit es keine neuen Eltern mehr gibt. Wer keine Kinder hat, kann ihretwegen natürlich nicht in Teilzeit sein.

    Spaß beiseite; bei den meisten Menschen ist spätestens so um die 40 klar, ob sie kinderlos bleiben oder nicht. Ein Transferfreies System würde sogar jüngere Familien belohnen, da deren Kinder bereits wirtschaftlich aktiv sein können, wenn das Alter kommt.
