  • And I need it to be robust, I spend plenty of time fixing broken software at my day job, I have zero interest in babysitting shit at home.

I set up our stack 3 years ago at work and have only had to touch it twice. It's honestly impressive how robust this stuff can be

  • Once you have the infrastructure to self host stuff (literally just an old PC running proxmox in a corner) it's kinda fun just messing with hosting your own open source services.

I set up a bunch for my job since we had no project management infrastructure and now I'm addicted to running containers.

  • Going to just mention that I have not used Java, but I do dislike Python for its (lack of a) typing system.

Python does have a typing system, it's very strictly typed, that's just hidden from you by default at runtime unless you explicitly inspect the type. Otherwise it's all duck typed which can be useful when you're dealing with data pipelines and don't really care about strict typing.

There's also the type hinting system, which can be irritating since it's essentially thrown away at runtime (technically, you can still access type annotations if you inspect signatures).

I treat that as more of a static check on my code, you can really quickly change something then follow the linter down the chain resolving all the type conflicts.

Hell I make the TypedDict an integral part of my code since it's just a regular python dictionary at runtime, but tells you the expected keys and types while in an IDE

  • I need to actually learn how to use css, every time I have to touch JS I feel an ick

  • Roseanne Barr? Is that you?

  • It's the go to for reviving old laptops at the thrift store I volunteer at. The people who come in to get laptops always seem to prefer Zorin over Mac and Windows once they get their hands on it. Mainly because it's snappy on just about anything.

Then again, is literally just Ubuntu with a gnome skin and KDE connect installed. They did a good job with the UI tweaks, but you don't need Zorin to use them, just copy them over onto anything else

  • I love that Microsoft focused on B2B while Apple focused on getting their computers and OS into kids hands, so you have this beautiful mess of all jobs requiring weird, niche Windows knowledge while everyone who's under the age of 50 came up with a POSIX compliant BSD fork and probably ended up switching to Linux at some point.

Eventually everything will be Linux since that old guard is dying out, and open source doesn't have the shareholder baggage. We're already seeing it happen in most civilized nations.

  • As I says elsewhere in this thread, I think this is a good little example project for people dipping their toes into making packages. I know I'll probably use it as reference if I ever get around to making a package that isn't just for PyPi lol

  • I love how much scaffolding there is even for something this simple. A whole CLI help interface and everything

    Fantastic little example project tbh

  • Yep, it's a game of whack a mole. If it wasn't Microsoft doing this, it would be considered a major national security threat or published as one of the most successful data breaches in history.

Talking about it like that would reveal that AI is just a name for intellectual property and data theft at a societal scale though and since the entire economy is now floated by the hype...well that's not gonna happen

  • Micropython is such a neat little library/language.

The file based system is such a nice idea and so much less finicky than the comile/upload workflow. Plus getting a terminal you can directly run microython code from is great for debugging.

  • We're in the "rip the copper wiring out of the walls" stage of capitalism. Everything is now blatantly and openly built on theft.

IP laws will still apply to regular folks (and will likely become more draconian), but for investment firms and public companies with shareholders, IP theft will be their bread and butter.

  • My uncle runs IT for a big legal firm and this is such a headache for them. Lawyers are suddenly having confidential client data scraped automatically by windows to train their AI.

The IT team won't even be notified about it until someone asks if they can use the AI option in Notepad or Outlook or something then they have to go and manually block the connections across the whole network.

This is gonna be such a privacy and legal clusterfuck once someone figures out how to extract this training data

  • They do a lot of breaking charges between versions right? XAML is meant to be pretty rock solid since it's targeted at "enterprise" software development where they make the program layout once then never touch it again.

The fact that this hit their core utilities is insane though. Those should have been thoroughly tested before release.

  • If I do that, I'd be rivaling the national debt lol

  • XAML is such a terrible format too. Insane that they managed to break something that's a core component of their entire OS interface.

Windows just behaving like GTK now, but without the ability for users to just switch

  • Having actually maintained and accredited science and engineering orgs that aren't captured by any interest but human interest would be necessary. Those groups would also need to be used to implement larger scale political goals.

Otherwise you just end up with groups that will yes man power and act selfishly. Scientists and engineers are just as susceptible to the pressures of the political superstructure as any other group.

Once you have that ability though, the barriers to this have already been torn down though and it's not necessary to gatekeep, but instead just divide labor fairly to those who have the ability. Which means all sectors of labor are capable of running the part of society that they have qualifications and skills for.

  • Homelander is a great example of this too. It literally could not be more obvious, but people still love him

  • It's not that there's nothing to do, it's that the stuff to do costs money. You don't need physical alienation when social and cultural alienation work just as well.

That's why 3rd spaces are so important.
