  • Not all communists are tankies. I understand many people (especially Americans) assume that connection because of the cold war era propaganda. However, many self identified communists have no respect or admiration for authoritarian states like China or the USSR.

& I think solarpunk tends to draw in communists, anarchists, libertarians and other radical views. To create a significant change in how humans relate to the environment around us, we would also likely need a significant change in how we relate to eachother. This means some sort of change to our modern system of profit based sucess (i.e. modern capitalism).

  • That video effected how i think about modern solutions not necessarily how i picture a potantial solarpunk future. So I voted yes to the question.

I agree just slapping trees on buildings is not going to magically fix modern society's much deeper issues. I do still think having roof top gardens is something that could work for a much more advanced civilization with different construction methods and materials.

I dunno i think it has a place in the more imaginative side of solarpunk... a living building (like the ships and buildings from octavia butlers liliths brood series) could definetly support gardens. Or specially grown tree houses. Or hollowed out "mountains" with sunlight vents and an entire forest on the surface. Ooooo or maybe some floating islands where people live inside the verticle garden beds.

Modern concrete and steel based architecture is definetly not ready to have that level of greenery integrated into the building structures. One of the communes I lived at had a rooftop garden, & we had tons of issues with leaks and just the sheer weight of all that dirt and plant material on the structure.

I still love the idea though, lol just not in the modern era.

  • What a beautiful community. Thanks for sharing :)

  • That's a great mindset to have. I write as well & it's for the love of craft, definetly not the paycheck lol

Stories are just so fun to tell, I'm looking forward to reading yours :)

  • I like them both up top. It makes the image pop more & looks more traditionally bookish to me.

I think splitting makes the most sense for covers that have a series title up top by the book title.

I do think they both look good & it doesn't make too much of a difference.

Good luck with you book launch :) I know it can be a tough market for new/indie writers

  • Quick survey to take, maybe 5 min. Just for anyone wondering :)

  • I agree it's all about access and boundries.

My 2yo neice has a designated smartphone, but she only gets it for short periods. My sister picks the app and locks the phone so that the app cant be exited. For things like going out to dinner, it's incredibly useful & I don't think damaging.

All she watches is miss rachel, lol maybe some bluey or aquarium feeds.

I think her having a phone is mostly useful so that there is one to give her without worrying about your nice expensive device getting grubby kid hands all over it.

  • Is this a real niche? Cuz I would watch some if you have recs

  • Honestly I'd be down for one of the debates to be replaced by a big wresting match. VP candidates can tag in. Everyone gets silly outfits. Their one liners all have to do with policy. It would probably get a much bigger turnout than traditional debates lmao

Edited to add: it would probably better reflect current american politics too. Two actors play fighting in a gimmicky show. Sadly tho this match would be able to effect your daily life

  • I love the way the paint color and wood finish compliment eachother! The shed is super cute. Looks like a good size too.

What's the inside like? Any built in shelves or other cool things?

  • Definetly still alot of good content on reddit. Lemmy is very new so the niche communities arent here, and lemmy doesnt have years of post and comment history to fill things out.

I do think with time those things will happen on lemmy & that the administrative priorities of reddit will slowly make that space less useful. Right now both have their uses, but i have high hopes for the furture of decentralized social media.

  • It definetly does. Small niche subs dont attract advertisers the way the massive subs do.

It makes sense advertisers are going to target spaces with the most people

  • Yeah! Thats definetly a step in the right direction. Programs like that will help ease the transition towards a new system as technology continues advancing.

Now we just need more countries/people to jump on board lol

  • I see where youre comming from & also think its important to support artists I like, and I do. I think both AI and artists can coexist & serve different purposes.

Something like this, using AI for a banner, is using a tool for people to create something they couldnt/wouldnt before. It doesnt mean I'm not going to buy a cool print or painting from an artist I like.

& I think its cool to have something that aggregates information and makes it accesible and easy to work with for the masses. Its messed up that it is currently controlled by corporate interests, but there are also people working on FOSS ai. Its this kind of snapshot of humanity in its current state, that I think goes beyond any particular artist/writer/person.

I get being worried about it taking jobs, but I think new ones will spring up to take their place.

(Or really optimistically maybe well see some sort of radical change that will make the concept of 'earning a living' obsolete, like UBI or something)

Edited to add: as a writer, people who buy my writing wouldnt just use ai to replace me. If anything it can supplement my work by making it easier for fans to make fanart & help build hype around the universe and characters that I created.

  • Yo db dont let these haters get you down. I think it looks like a really cool project and love the idea of a shifting banner than anyone can contribute prompts to. I also love the idea of backgroud details being influenced by various metrics of the community.

AI is a tool (just like photoshop, electric lawn mowers, and combustion engines). Anyone who thinks its replacing artists are really underestimating the editing needed to produce something good from AI generators. And this is comming from a writer who loves how much AI has helped with various parts of the process.

  • This picture is so high quality lol i can count the hairs on that cats belly

  • Thats such a good point i hadnt thought about before. Training data helps the ai know what is most common, so its products tend to be tropy, predictable and a bit bland (which is great for some things). They are often lacking that ooomph that makes great works truely unique and fascinating.

  • Its kind of scary to think of how the profit motive is capable of decaying even our basic infastructure and transportation. Hopefully it serves as some sort ofwake up call and change comes before things deteriorate any further.

Really well written article, thanks for sharing.

  • Awesome! Glad to hear your set up is scaling well to new uses 😀
