  • We lived off grid in the bush here in Australia on Northern NSW for a decade with a 2kW solar system and batteries, never had an issue, ran everything (computer, kettle, microwave, welder, induction cooktop etc) except for the oven. We left in 2020 because of climate chanhe making bushfires worse and have now moved to Tasmania, off a flood plain, 270m ASL, and zero bush fire risk.

    We now have a small cottage on a hectare, on the edge of small village, we have 8kW solar here (so far south solar in winter is an issue) , the excess goes into the grid for which we are paid a small amount and we now have an ecar we need for very occasioanl use (mostly use our ebikes amd walk) , all charged off solar.

    To have effective action, you'd need to ban flying, ban cruise ships, ban private cars , ban petrol lawn equipment, ban recreational offroad vehicles, and recreational boating, ban meat eating pets, ban advertising, ban large houses, make being a billionaire a criminal offence etc

    What most people mean is, slap up a couple solar panels and wind turbines and be done with it, which makes it worse, like using an aspirin for li g cancer and saying you've taken action and the problems solved !

    Climate change is a demand side and human behavioural issue. To know what people really want, look to voting results, the rest of it is just bullshit.

    IMO, interestingly, John Kenneth Galbraith touched on some of the reasons why in his Essay "The culture of contentment".

  • Depending on who you ask, we passed it and are at 1.7C since pre-industrial era.

    Whomever is saying that can be ignored, the 1.5 they are talking about is a rolling 30 year average. We're at about 1.3 now

    1.5 is horrific but likely survivable, 2c is horrific as tipping points will take over and we'll be unable to stop going to 4C and beyond and collapsing civilisation.
