  • That would explain why a pencil, which contains a "lead" (actually a polymer or graphite now) is Bleistift

  • Accelerando by Charles Stross.

  • Well, not terribly subtle, but if you are fighting with your spouse and they complain that you never say anything nice about their family, you can respond with:

"Well, I have to say that your in-laws are better than my in-laws"

  • If you are in Canada, there is a drop-in alternative to SodaStream CO2 cylinders. It's called Indigo, and I have found cylinders in Giant Tiger and Home Hardware. They are also significantly cheaper both to buy and refill then SodaStream.

I don't know if Indigo sells the machines themselves, or only the cylinders, but since I already had a SodaStream machine, it didn't matter.

  • I'm disappointed with The Onion.

    "For what it already doing"

  • Flowers for Algernon is it fairly short read. It was originally a novella, then expanded to novel size. It's also an amazing book.

  • Well, there's also the fact that she doesn't know the names of the vast number of medications (I assume that doctors here are expected to know both brand and generic names), and she may be used to different procedures and standards.

To work in Canada as a doctor she would have to undergo significant training just to be effective. Presumably there are few or no spaces for that kind of training in Canadian medical schools. It may also be that training as a nurse will give her the vocabulary and familiarity with the Canadian medical system that will allow her to write the exams and qualify as a doctor.

  • That is to say, a significant portion of dust is actually skin cells shed by humans.

  • I wonder if there are some people on the American right who actually see it as a kind of Darwinian cleansing of their society.

They want to get rid of the week, the elderly, and the stupid, and this is a way for those people to self-select for extermination.

Of course there will be some collateral damage, but those who know better can protect themselves. You think that Trump and those around him don't have every vaccination that you've ever heard of, and probably some that you haven't?

  • That looks awful, but to be fair I have been driving on Highway 401 at the end of a long weekend (I'm usually going in the opposite direction, thank God), and the slowdowns start about 100 km from Toronto.

In Japan, on holidays like Golden Week, you sometimes get an entire highway, 75 km or more, stopped.

  • Yes. That was a quick close of the web browser for me.

  • I don't know if you have a website, but my $5/month shared web host allows me to set up a git server, and I think many of them are similar.

  • I think that someone once described cracker barrel as "the place you go when you are too lazy to microwave dinner yourself".

  • I get three to five spam emails every day from Republican agents asking "Patriots" to send money to help defend against the woke liberals. They keep changing the subjects and domains sent from, so it is difficult to block them effectively.

The kicker is that I live in Canada, and have never lived in the US or been eligible to vote in a US election.

  • The thing is that Trump doesn't understand subtlety, and public displays of fealty are what really get him off.

  • I went to elementary school in the 1960s and '70s, and had only one male teacher then. I don't think it's a new phenomenon.

  • For me, obsolete often means that I can no longer repair an important tool if it breaks. If I can't get a replacement hard drive or video card or power supply for my ancient Windows computer, I need to think about getting a new computer, just to minimize risk.

  • That's discriminatory! Actually it's because they have dark skin. As a native South african, Musk knows this. Fortunately, he was able to immigrate in 1988 before things went bad. You silly

  • Or the dozens (hundreds?) of hours that Robin Williams spent as libbing as the genie in Aladdin. I think it was in his contract that they couldn't even use it anywhere else
