  • there are a lot of strong feelings about gnome but i have never taken the time to find out what or why

  • @comma@midwest.social This is an extremely thorough answer directly to your question. It even has the same xkcd comic in the conclusion!

My opinion: We really need to be supporting this stuff with tax money. Meantime give money to orgs that advocate for related causes to benefit all or distribute grants. EFF, FSF, Right 2 Repair, public and specialty libraries.

  • but sometimes i just want to be passive aggressive

  • I like hexbear.

Modding is a tough row to how.

  • mint

    • generally a solid choice
    • you have a friend who uses it! big advantage

people who make memes about linux distros are in a lot deeper than you want to be. they have different goals.

  • will it go faster than xubuntu?

well IME when you reinstall it will usually go faster at first no matter what because you don't have a lot of crap running to slow it down. but idk if it'll go inherently faster.

because it doesn't use any snap applications?

It's been a while since I used xubuntu but are you required to use Snaps? Someone might correct me but it seems like you could just refrain from using them, no? I've never used snaps anywhere.

I believe on both xubuntu and Mint you can install software via Synaptic package manager.

will it have a modern ui?

it has XFCE4 as the desktop environment. Xubuntu also runs XFCE4 (that's what the "x" stands for). They will have essentially the same UI. Any differences will just be in the theming, which you could just change the themes yourself without going to the trouble of reinstalling.

I personally like the retro feel of XFCE4. If you want something more "modern" you might like to try KDE. You can install that with Synaptic package manager on either xubuntu or Mint.

what will be the pros be for using linux mint xfce please?? over xubuntu

From my understanding, Mint is a bit better on the Libre side of things and is less likely to introduce proprietary stuff into your system.

My feeling is that they are substantially the same as each other.

Always make backups before making any major changes. :)

  • You sound like a realitiophobe.

  • Keep reading Lemmy. The answers here. Somewhere.

  • NO if you were describing your situation even half-way accurately, the above comment is DANGEROUS.

  • did you read the post? OP is describing shit flowing down the street. You seem to be under the FALSE impression this is mainly dangerous if it gets in a wound. Not at all considering what if it gets into the digestive system to name but one other point of entry. Try reading the first few paragraphs of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WASH and skimming around. I don't see a lot of "germ phobia" being discussed here.

sewers fecal matter had overflown onto the road

this is critically dangerous which will certainly result in extreme illness in the neighborhood. People die from these kinds of situations. They tend not to be accompanied by robust health systems or other supports. There has obviously been neglect / catastrophe on the public health front.

Your advice is patronizing, inane, ignorant... and dangerous.

  • Jump
  • this is a perfect use for a computer to figure out because it's running through lists of related words that fit a criteria to find rhymes and other matches.

  • You can't drink it.

  • You can't sanitize something that's dirty. First you need to clean it properly with soap and water. Iso alcohol is toxic TO DRINK. spray it all you want.

You should wash your hands with soap and water for 30 seconds, look up on you tube for a video on how to do it properly. Yes there are right and wrong ways to wash your hands.

You should boil all water you will drink. Ensure all food is cooked to a temp of >75C internally. Dont eat food that can't be, like salad or cut fruit. OK to eat fruit with an intact peel you remove yourself like orange or banana. Clean the unpeeled fruit and your hands with soap and water first.

If you are able, get vaccinated for all applicable disease.

Keep some oral rehydration solution (ORS) on hand in case you get some sort of diarrhea, which you eventually will. It can help you get better from a milder case. https://www.wikihow.com/Make-an-Oral-Rehydration-Salts-Drink-(ORS)

Ultimately the problem is collective, you are likely to get all kinds of infectious disease until the sewage problem is resolved for the whole community. There is little 1 person can do in such a situation to fix it only for themselves.

  • I don't understand how 2.5 is comprehensible but 8 is normal.

It should cost a lot more than 8 to make a shirt.

  • Yes first step is to convert all nationalism into gayness.

  • I used the Flym RSS client to find feeds because it has a search function. So I collected some in that app and export/imported into Feeder as an OPML.

I know it's not exactly answering your question. If you are just wanting to get a sense of what's happening outside the US, BBC, al jazeera etc are basic. They are all biased.

There are directories like https://feeder.co/discover/news to get you started. But if you want less mainstream stuff, then the best thing is to check out some forums/comms where the kind of news you are interested is being shared and go to the publisher site. Most have RSS but it isn't always advertised so sometimes you have to hunt around for the feed URL.

  • If such a thing was currently possible, you'd know about it.

  • Electronic Frontier Foundation has a good collection of articles and guides that are not just practical but teach you how to think about your own particular situation: Surveillance Self-Defense

First thing is you need to think about your "threat model". Which means what information are you trying to protect, and why? There is no universally "best" way to do anything. Tactics that might increase security/privacy in one situation might impair it in another. Like if you are trying to avoid getting doxxed by random internet people who take a dislike to you that's one thing, but if you are trying to avoid government (which government(s)?) spying that's another. If you are trying to avoid government spying, is it to avoid legal prosecution, or to avoid covert interference in your organizing (ala COINTELPRO)? They can be totally different kinds of surveillance so you need to have different strategies to avoid them.

Also need to consider that making an extremely elaborate or onerous plan that you will never bother to actually enact, or requires a high degree of technical skill or perfect execution might not be practical. They might interfere with your purpose too much.

This page covers the basics of how to think about your own goals, fears and priorities. It's very generic but is a good overview. It's really key to think about this ongoing to avoid falling into the trap of following advise that might be perfectly reasonable for another person but counter productive for yourself.
