I think one of the main reasons why the fediverse didn’t blow up much bigger than it did over the past couple of years is because of the weird and insistent need to explain how it works from every possible angle with seemingly every possible analogy. It’s information overload and it only confuses the shit out of people who do not care in the slightest how it works.
Hmm… maybe if we tell the nerds that they need to add an “abstraction layer” to their explanations that might motivate them to simplify?
The particular small town I live in has about five “main” families that pretty much own everything and everywhere. They’re also the ones who hold all the local government positions. If I would’ve known all this before moving here, I would not have. At least now I know to research things like that before choosing a place to live in the future. Nepotism is not only common here, it’s a way of life.
I had a drunk driver crash into my car parked in front of my house at 3:15 in the afternoon and completely totaled the car. He sped away as I watched and so I called the police. They did catch up with him, but ultimately when it went to court the district attorney dropped the ball on some document details and the fuckhead basically got out of any sort of restitution. He did have his license revoked and probation, but my family no longer had a car and it seriously fucked us for well over a year.
I live in a small town and a couple years later I found out that the guy is not only related to the local judge, but also the district attorney.
Perfect timing for me! I was starting to plan out how I was going to transcode my media library and had decided to write a script to do it. So I’ll give this one a try!
I had the same thoughts about using a domain as username and it is basically smoke and mirrors. I did not know however that you can use a domain for a bridged account. Are you saying that my ActivityPub account that is bridged to Bluesky can have a username that is a domain that I own?
It really is great! The amount of innovation and creativity in regard to the Fediverse is amazing. Although Bluesky seems to be blowing up big right now, I’m actually hopeful that it will motivate those of us within the ActivityPub realm to create even more and it seems to already be happening.
I’d love to see an easier path of entry to Lemmy as well. “Community Packs” would be a great way to help with that!
The Pixelfed developer is actively working to get a streamlined solution for Starter Packs out for all kinds of ActivityPub servers that will use existing APIs and methods that already exist within the protocol. He mentioned it should be available in beta in a day or two.
We need to get rid of the old phone system entirely and switch to something authenticated that can’t be spoofed or abused as easily as our current phone system can be. When I think about it, it’s kind of weird that we haven’t done that yet. Probably because it would cost too much for the big phone carriers to do and then they wouldn’t get their billion dollar bonuses at the end of the year.
I already block all non-contact calls and messages, well, I filter them out and check them every few days to make sure nothing important has happened. Just like my spam folder in my email. If I let spam calls actually ring-through on my phone it would drive me insane because I get at least a dozen bullshit calls a day.
It really does feel like the system itself is designed to set up those of us with psychological disorders (and neurological conditions) for failure. My mental health provider that I must use, because they’re the only ones around, has this “just in time” system where they will only schedule appointments one week prior to when the appointment is supposed to be. So instead of just making an appointment for say October 30, you have to wait until October 23rd, call in, try to get set up for the following week (if available) and then you get a confirmed date. Also, if you miss an appointment and don’t make a new one within a week they will discharge after another 7 days. That’s crazy, these patients have disorders that absolutely cause them to miss appointments and completely avoid them in some cases.
To be blunt, the entire mental healthcare system is totally fucked in the US. I don’t get worked up over anything ever really, but this shit pisses me off.
On a positive note, congratulations on getting setup for treatment again! It really is a feat of fortitude in this country and you got it done!
It’s crazy to me that a company can just abandon hundreds (or thousands?) of 700 pound machines all over the place like this. I feel like there should be some kind of court order for the person last in charge of the company to drive the fuck around the country and clean up their mess.
Thanks for digging those up! I figured it was somewhere around that range. I’ve had it be fairly accurate within a couple feet, but I’ve also had Bluetooth proximity show much further.
Does Yunohost use containers like CasaOS? I’ve been using CasaOS for miscellaneous home stuff, but I can’t explain or justify it, I just don’t like containers.
Perhaps lower the contrast a bit? Use some gray and charcoal color? Presently it looks like what I see when I have migraine aura… and I don’t intend that to be mean or anything!
I agree with you, people end up going the perceived “easy route” because of the amount of explaining and low level protocol exposure that they receive from someone who is trying to sell them on joining an ActivityPub network. And that’s just the people who are trying to encourage them to join, then there’s the people that straight up think “normal social media” people don’t belong on the fediverse because of one biased reason or another…
