  • Why do you think the planet can't sustain some amount of people? It's not because we don't have enough space, we have plenty of space – especially if we prioritize car-free or low-car dense urban infrastructure design. The problem is we don't have enough resources. Even if we could send a bunch of people into space, that doesn't do anything for our problem at all. In fact, it just increases the strain on our resources.

    Space stations require a lot of maintanence and monitoring, we can't just make a few billion of them and then hope it'll work out. It's far too complicated and unsustainable without very hard-to-find professionals. And a few easy mistakes by this completely untrained and unprofessional crew of an unimaginable amount of people can put everyone in danger. Whatever habitat could fit hundreds of thousands to millions of people has a TON of failure points, with our current technology it is in a sense too big to not catastrophically fail in a short time period. Space is dangerous, death is easy, sabatoging the entire vessel carrying everyone is easy, and maintaining one is extremely difficult and it would have many easy-to-miss potential problems. It's not as nice as video games make it out to be, especially considering those are usually hundreds of years in the future or in a totally different universe.

    We're all going to die of worldwide war before we find any use in sending a million people into space, and we're going to die before we can even feasibly do it at all, probably. I would like to see it, but it's just a massive waste of resources if we're being realistic – there is nothing to achieve with it.

  • Sorry what? Rust has literally been known for having some of the most useful compiler warnings imaginable. It's like, a huge selling point. Misleading warnings are far and few, and usually it'll literally point you at the exact tokens that caused an error and gives you a solution to fix it.

    Are you sure that your inability to write Rust isn't caused by a lack of understanding of the language's pointer/ownership/lifetime rules, or the type system? I would be inclined to believe that someone who mainly just uses Python (or any other GC'd language really, but especially extremely high-level/"low-code" dynamically-typed languages like Python/Lua/JavaScript) wouldn't exactly be too good at those concepts, but they're pretty important in the context of languages like Rust.

  • Much of the obsession internet people have over ""privacy"" is just a feel-good-about-themselves thing, rather than actually protecting themselves from their data being collected and used. If you're posting on the internet, yes that includes Lemmy, there's almost no doubt that any government and world-destroying corporation would have easy access to everything about you in an instant, even if you go out of your way to try to use services "focused on privacy". You aren't protecting yourself from anything by not using Google/Microsoft/etc. products.

    There is no "chipping away bit-by-bit" when it comes to this, it's pretty much meaningless unless you're nearly completely off the grid, to the point where you don't even use modern technology. The worst you're gonna do otherwise is fuck up targetted ads, but that's not very hard to do considering Google apparently thought I was a pregnant woman looking for leather boots and beauty products when I still had ads on YouTube.

    I wish people would admit it's really not about their privacy. Say it's because FOSS services are better (because they are), say it's so you don't get spam from shitty sites you gave your email to, say it's so you can fit in in your niche online communities, whatever. But 99.99% of people in "privacy" communities haven't even put a dent in the data being collected from them by large entities, hell most people in these communities think VPNs will protect them from anything at all other than their parents or boss not noticing them being on porn sites (VPNs can help with privacy, but only under specific conditions that most people aren't meeting)...

  • software engineer (engineer for short), software developer (dev/developer for short), software designer (although that last one sounds weird). the job is a lot more than programming, depending on your position it can be mostly communication or mostly engineering or mostly something else entirely. maybe even mostly sitting on your ass all day!

  • Idk what the other guy's problem is, he needs some serious help, but the OP isn't minimizing abuse, he's providing reasonable explanations for this occuring. He's not minimizing anyone's abuse, and accusing him of such a thing is unhelpful to say the least.

    Should it be this way? No, it'd be way better if men and women weren't treated any differently and everyone was encouraged to get the help they need equally. I read his comment as saying this is a cultural issue, not a Google issue, and that it's important that those of us who can should speak openly with other people about the problems gender inequality causes in our society in order to push our communities to treat both men and women seriously when it comes to things like abuse.

    If I were to expand on that I'd also say that it's worsened by the fact that our society's perception of abuse in general is completely fucked, and that treating one group as the aggressor and the other as the victim by default hurts everyone in many ways, but that's a larger scope than the topic at hand and I don't want to risk derailing the discussion of our culture's refusal to see men as potential victims.

    Point is he's not at all blaming men, or saying "men are statistically more likely to do X so they SHOULD treat it like this", he's saying "men are more likely to do X which is their rationalization for them treating it like this, but it's part of a bigger problem that we need to fix". But maybe I'm not seeing how it was a malicious comment.

    You lost all hopes of othere taking you seriously as soon as you implied Putin is a democratic leader, let alone outright saying "yeah, Russia invaded 3 bordering countries part of its former empire that it has historical ideological/nationalistic goals to conquer, took a chunk of their land and put it in the hands of rebels, has been in the process of removing the soveirgnty of a 4th bordering country for 3 decades, and invaded a 5th bordering country to overthrow the government and make it a puppet state of the USSR – BUT this surely isn't at all like when Germany did the same thing with Austria, Slovakia, Czechia, and Poland, or when Italy did the same thing to Albania, Greece, and Ethiopia"

    Russia already had Crimea secured from their previous invasion of Ukraine many years prior (which happened after Ukraine deposed of their Russian puppet dictator in a revolution BTW), the outbreak of the more recent stage of the war had little to do with Crimea. They have used the Donbass as a nationalistic war goal towards Ukraine for a long time, to say that it belongs to Russia because there are a lot of ethnic Russians (which is how almost any border region with a much larger country goes), and now that they've started a war with that they've declared full intent to dissolve Ukraine as a soveirgn state and incorporate it into Russia. It is not about some strategically important areas, it is about continuing Russification and making Russia "what it once was" by absorbing neighbour states. After Belarus and Ukraine, Georgia is undoubtedly next – hell, the only reason Russia isn't doing the same thing to Georgia is because they're busy getting their ass handed to them by Ukraine.

  • You forgot about Georgia, Moldova, and Afghanistan... all of which Russian troops fully invaded (Georgia & Afghanistan) or at the very least sent core military forces to fight against in a primarily Russian-backed war (Moldova), all in the past 1 to 4 decades. Although in Afghanistan's case, it wasn't to take land or annex it or anything, it was just to overthrow the government. Still a blatant invasion though.

    They've also stripped Belarus of most of its autonomy via installing a puppet government a few years after it gained independence, and have now effectively incorporated in into Russia in all but name via the Union State.

    Azerbaijan and Armenia would have both likely been candidates for absorption by Russia in the future for various reasons, but that is entirely speculative, and the only ones which constantly are currently facing extreme encroachment on territory or independence by Russia are currently Belarus, Ukraine, and Georgia.

    When the dictator and military leaders of a larger country are all talking about how the lands of their former domain (located in significantly smaller countries) are rightfully historically theirs and stuff, you know exactly what their goals are... It doesn't matter if it's Hitler, Mussolini, Horthy, Putin, or anyone else, their intentions are clear.
