  • I coasted by in school, doing pretty much nothing, relying on my quick learning skills then forgetting everything immediately after. Teachers were apparently super anxious about my lack of attention in class, but then stopped stressing out when they saw my grades or asked me any questions. I just did my shit while they taught the rest of the class. As far as I can remember, back then they were talking about hyperactive kids, not really ADHD. I didn’t fit the criteria for hyperactivity. My brother did, but I did fine in school, so I was okay, right?

    Then higher education hit, I got kicked out of one school, more or less crawled my way up and barely made it into university after a couple years of messing around. I dropped out halfway through, thoroughly depressed and even more confused about my own capabilities. I just couldn’t keep up, when I managed just fine as a kid and teen. I didn’t know what was happening to me. I felt like a fucking idiot.

    Somehow, I have now wiggled my way into development/programming for the last 8 years by doing an accelerated pre-universitary program and job hopping my way to better roles. I have lead teams, helped businesses grow from startups to getting acquired or having internal growing, I do pretty fine financially speaking, have a beautiful wife and kids… but it really never feels like I’m doing that good. I know I am doing fine, objectively speaking, but I suck at being objective with myself lol

  • I thought I didn’t have much to tell, but turns out, I could have said the same. I did earn a tiny bit at one point when playing local venues and recording demos for local bands back then, but it was basically just gas money for the band most of the time lol

  • I’ve yet to play Alyx, but I have a similar experience with most of VR gaming. It’s an interesting experience, but the controller UX gets really annoying very quickly, IMHO. I’ve had quite some fun playing Elite Dangerous until I got bored. The only VR game I play with some semi regularity is Beat Saber, especially when a good pack comes out…

  • Not OP, but EWI is Electronic Wind Instrument. It’s basically a fancy MIDI controller/synthesizer in a clarinet-like format.

  • I was raised in a relatively high wealth family. Not personal jet rich, but still rich enough that we were going on vacation to fancy places a lot, dad had pretty cars, a big house, we went on ski trips, and played golf, etc. My wife was raised by a single mother with a more or less absentee father, working where she could to raise her two girls.

    I already knew I was lucky and privileged, my parents kept telling my siblings and I, but it never really registered to me just how much. The skill I learned a lot about is empathy, I think.

  • I mean, of course it’s gonna be interprets nowadays if the composers are dead, but composers were also often musicians or directors for their own music when they were alive 🤷‍♂️ It’s very difficult to play multiple instruments by yourself to hear your own composition when multitrack audio recording wasn’t a thing lol

    A more accurate equivalence for the Beatles cover band would be if they were from year 2187 and all of The Beatles’ recordings were lost to time, which wouldn’t be particularly weird at this point, considering nobody alive in this year would remember what hearing The Beatles was like.

    I guess if you’re talking about classical music as we live it now the comparison kind of makes sense, but “classical music” means so many things, spanning a couple centuries through multiple countries and waves - e.g. Bach, Mozart and Glass barely have anything to do with each other.

    Mozart would probably go fucking nuts looking at modern notation software like Sibelius/MuseScore/Dorico tho lol

    Extremely debatable. With Renaissance and Romanticism came the cult of personality around celebrities. Lisztomania basically mirrored Beatlemania but for the virtuoso Hungarian pianist and composer, in the mid 1800s. Haydn and Paganini reportedly had a rather large female followings who weren’t really interested in their knack for musical harmony. IIRC, there are accounts of Mozart indulging in the lifestyle of a young royal composer with some renown.

    I don’t know if he’d be making electronic music, honestly. Mozart broke so many of his contemporary musical rules, with all that has been invented since, I find it hard to believe he’d limit himself to it. Maybe progressive/experimental stuff ala Aphex Twin lol?

  • I mean, I use formatters everywhere I can exactly so I don’t have to think about code style. I’ll take a full code base that’s consistent in a style I dislike, over having another subjective debate about which style is prettier or easier to read, any day. So whatever cargo fmt spits out is exactly what I’ll prefer, regardless of what it looks like, if only for mere consistency.

  • Bismuth (and Krohnkite before) never worked nearly as well for me, and AFAIK are both abandoned. The built in tiling is closer to FancyTiles/tiling zones, not auto-tiling like Pop Shell. Pop Shell also has been here for “years” by that metric lol

  • The BMTH thing to me is hilarious. Their first popular single was “Pray for Plagues”, where Oli is asking God to burn this world to the ground, for fucks sake. I guess those fans discovered them post-deathcore and mostly know their singles without reading the lyrics too much, or at all? I genuinely don’t know how else they’d get this idea it’s a Christian friendly band lol

I’m moving next year for accessibility and proximity to hospitals, due to illness in the family… Just moving to that next place and making it livable is gonna take a lot of time and monetary investment… Getting me to move again then would take said place not to be livable anymore, probably…
