  • Context is really important.

I agree that the QLD legislation is scary - it's bullshit that their legislation is going to "proscribe" that specific phrase, so if one utters it then that's an offense regardless of intent or context.

  • It really is.

The thing is it has very strong im-15-and-this-is-deep energy and it has it's own wikipedia page and it's something that every idiot on lemmy and reddit has heard of and it makes them feel superior to trot it out at every opportunity.

The irony is, as you say, every time someone references the paradox of intolerance they're literally invoking it in order to justify being intolerant.

Yes, it's true that some opinions and behaviors should not be tolerated. However, the things which we as a society choose not to tolerate need to be very carefully considered in each and every instance.

The paradox of intolerance allows one to merely brand a person or group of people you don't like as being "intolerant" and then you're free to exclude them from your circle of tolerance.

  • Hey I engage in all sorts of bullshit risky DIY shenanigans but... the only answer anyone can really give you is "no, it's not safe".

In this particular case though I'd give you a "hard no, do not attempt".

IDK what your cistern is like but generally the fixtures just arent going to support an additional 60 to 100kg.

As a bonus, if it goes then it will shatter on the floor and you'll come down on top of all those wicked sharp edges. Fuck that.

Kinda curious why you have to reach the ceiling there, but... find another way, like a longer tool or whatever.

  • No worries - not trying to tell you what you said or what you meant to say.

FWIW I absolutely agree with you.

There's a whole lot of "closing the gate behind you" going on, even with more recent migrants.

  • This article asks whether migrants feel they belong, not whether other Australian's feel that migrants belong.

  • There are loads of justifications really.

I personally have been school everything-should-be-electronic for the last 20 years or so.

However, more recently I've started to swing back to hard copy. Not necessarily for my own personal use but I'm just more tolerant.

2 of my colleagues prefer to print some documents they're working on rather than looking at everything on monitors. If it's a long list of things you can tick things off, or use some physical object to mark your position. It's all so effectively free screen real estate. I don't really do this but I can see why others do.

I also had a fancy e-ink remarkable tablet which I used daily for a year or so but I've returned to just having a nice physical notebook. I much prefer it.

Another example is maps. A physical, thoughtfully designed map is a work of art. A pleasure to hold and use. It really inspires a deeper connection to a location or landscape than an app. You can write things on it. Show things to people. Give it to someone.

In the case of a spiral bound project brief, maybe some people involved just do everything with spiral bound booklets. Maybe they like to keep everything related to a project in a physical file. I wouldn't get too worked up about someone else's workflow really. It's fine if it's not how you would do things, but if they're not hurting anyone, who cares.

  • This is a deeply unpopular take, but here goes.

There's loads of comments here saying "parents gotta parent", which of course is absolutely true.

The problem is, it's difficult to maintain a "no social" policy with your kid if every other kid in their peer group is engaging together on social media.

If there are government mandated age verification checks on social media, then even if they're trivial to bypass, at least it allows parents to stand together with other parents.

My position is, age verification isn't perfect, but it's better than nothing. I guess we'll see what teachers say about the current measures in the coming months.

  • I guess Trump really didn't like that Colbert interview with Talarico

  • Looking at the list of supported watches, there are only 2 with 5 star support and they seem quite old / obscure. I couldn't find any to buy second hand anyway.

  • Nah, it's not "too heavy" the linux kernel is running on all kinds of tiny processors.

My limited understanding is, that usually the problem is a lack of support and assistance from the hardware manufacturer to optimise the OS for their hardware.

This is why GrapheneOS and similar have poorer performance on phones et cetera.

  • Do we need the socks?

  • What a great question!

I think the future is going to be pretty fucken awful. I'm sorry, but everything is just so bleak.

Like if you think about how things were 10 years ago in February 2016, and compare it to now, and then extrapolate into the future, it's not really easy to find things that are going in the right direction.

We're supposed to be addressing Climate Change and Plastic waste, but populations the world over are lurching to the right and choosing instead to be mean to poor people.

That said, apparently we're really terrible at predicting the future. "If You're Listening" podcast did a short series about this. There was some audio messages recorded in the 1950s (?) that were intended to be listened to in the distant future, like now. The things they predicted were just bonkers really.

  • It seems you have a very concise definition of the "fae" which I've just never heard. That doesn't mean you're wrong, just an example of the difficulties of mythology as a means to transmit a message through the ages.

  • You're right, of course.

However, some consumers just can't or won't inform themselves as to appropriate choices.

It's not a question of how well it helps people to make informed choices, but merely a question of whether it's better than nothing.

  • What does it mean "to be happy"?

For most people happiness is illusory and transient.

Usually, satisfaction and fulfillment is a better way to describe what you want.

  • My feeling from her appointment to her resignation, is that they wanted her to lead the party during the turmoil that followed the last election.

It ticks a lot of boxes for them. Hand her this poison chalice where they knew she would have to navigate a lot of difficult challenges. Then at some time prior to the next election (like now) they can replace her with a man, who doesn't have any of that baggage from the last year.

  • They knifed Ley because of their abominable polls.

However, they also have a huge problem with diversity.

  • What?
