  • I'm just curious, could you go into more detail about what you mean by "capitalism"?

  • oui oui

the photo was taken at the shop Chaise Longue, a chain which specialises in humorous and original collections of household items and gifts. The product, called “Baguette knife” can be seen on the Chaise Longue website.

A price label is clearly visible next to the baguette in one of the pictures shared on social media saying “Une graine dans le bocal piment” (“A seed in the jar – chilli”), which is the name of a Chaise Longue product. It is a jar of chilli seeds, which is part of a range of different types of seeds in jars.

  • This meme implies this is only an issue of personal responsibility ; but in truth to actually lower car deaths we need a systemic approach.

Think of cigarette companies laying blame at "addictive personalities". They knew making people personally responsible would not threaten their business, whereas public policies against tobacco did.

This post is doing the same thing : when an accident happens we should not just ask "who is to blame?" but also "how do we prevent it in the future?", which in this case means redesigning streets to be friendlier to pedestrians and developing other modes of transportation.

  • Russia indeed has a small economy if converted into dollars, but not if the internal price of goods and services is considered. This is because the conversion only works for economies that are well connected and comparable.

This is doubly true for military matters which are very illiquid, and even more so given the sanctions Russia is facing. The measure you are looking for is called purchasing power parity adjustment, or "GDP (PPP)" for short. It is hard to compile though.

No need for "hmm", just readily available knowledge in economics.

In addition, Ukraine is only supplied by NATO insofar the politics of its member states allow. Many parties inside its members countries oppose supporting Ukraine, which you are no doubt aware of since you are yourself part of this discourse.

  • Didn't Gore win the 2000 election ? The Bush clan stole it and apparently the US just didn't care much.

  • I assume you mean keeping the outer diameter the same and making one ball lighter than the other. That's clever, it would eliminate aerodynamism as a factor.

However wouldn't results still vary, since hollowing out the metal ball increases its buoyancy ? (Archimedes' principle).

  • “This is a stark contrast to the U.S., where AI growth is increasingly tied to debates over data center power consumption and grid limitations”

Won't anyone rid us off this troublesome democracy, so that tech companies may grow in peace ?

  • dutch-style cycling where high gears are something you use when you're late for school

Where I lived in the Netherlands there often were electric bikes and scooters and sports bikes going 30+kph on the bike lanes.

  • This is [...] a strange marketing strategy by AI companies. Instead of selling products based on helpful features and letting users decide, executives often deploy scare tactics that essentially warn people they will become obsolete if they don't get on the AI bandwagon.

Very insightful for me to read this. If AI in its present state was as useful as it is advertised, it wouldn't need such apocalyptic language.

  • I have no proof but I suspect it is a mistranslation. The French legal term "bande organisée" literally means "organized crime group" but is simply the French counterpart to criminal conspiracy. That is to say, they are suspected not merely of breaking the law but also of having done so as a collective that knowingly planned for it.

  • I don’t have any statistic, but I would guess that the proportion of people wanting a Jack is significantly higher in the group of people interested in buying Fairphone that on the general population.

Fairphone literally does have that statistic. They spent effort to gather that info in order to inform their business decisions. And they report:

We also looked into the consumer data and Fairphone 4’s weight and thickness were more of an issue than the lack of a minijack

  • I don't understand this, why not call him the way he wants to be called ? He's despicable but his name isn't the problem, I don't see how calling him Bowman (or calling Donald "Drumpf") is making any progress.

And it kind of undermines the discourse that we should respect people's choice as to how they define themselves.

  • Do you remember the time Marco Rubio repeated the same thing twice during a presidential debate ? His speech included calling the US "the greatest nation in the history of the world" but no one minded that.

In most countries you would be ridiculed for saying something like that, but from what I understand Americans are taught that their country is the best in basically everything and they are very lucky to be born there because every other place is worse off.

  • The American military doesn't train to put on parade theatre for a despot. No high stepping, no elaborate formations or movements. None of that pointless bullshi

Marines doing the silent drill in dress uniform : 👀

  • I'm unsure I get your point, how does waste prevent a shortage from becoming a famine ?

Also, both raw cauliflower and tinned tomatoes can be eaten almost as is.

  • In political discourse anarchy has been given another meaning which is the elimination of undue power and self-governmen. Left anarchism focuses on eliminating hierarchies (power not justified by ability or need), while right anarchism focuses on eliminating special legal privileges such as those of the state.

  • My guess would be yes, the whole point of including a legacy port like this would be compatibility. Laptops used (still use?) PS/2 long after desktops moved to USB keyboards because the lack of polling meant improved battery life, so it'd make sense for the hardware support to still be there.

  • That's fine, but there's no rational basis for your position, and therefore no reason to call the dude "stupid" regarding that. He thinks life sucks and you don't but that's just a difference in values.

  • The obvious problem is... it's not possible to ask someone whether they would like to be conceived prior to conception.

Agreed, but how do you go from that to "therefore it's fine to conceive"?

If someone at a party is passed out and therefore it's not possible to communicate with them, we assume they don't consent to anything. Why doesn't the same reasoning apply here?
