I used to be on kbin as e0qdk@kbin.social before it broke down.

  • It's hard to build one that you can't make work, but a lot of manufacturers don't actually officially support it. It's a minor point, but one I care about -- especially when dealing with new hardware. I'd have wasted a lot more time trying to debug what was going on with Mint if they hadn't documented the need for a 6.11 kernel on their website, for example...

    • 128GB unified RAM
    • 16 cores / 32 threads
    • small form factor (4.5L)
    • similar/lower power consumption than my current daily driver despite much more powerful hardware (a lot of my parts are 10 or more years old...)
    • officially supports Linux
    • <$2K USD (not counting NVME and peripherals)

That combo was interesting enough to me to order one to mess around with. I could build a more powerful (but probably more energy hungry...) computer in a traditional desktop form factor. I don't think I could build a better SFF computer myself though, and I'm really curious to see just how far I can push the integrated GPU in this thing...

  • My pre-order from February just arrived, so I've been poking at it a bit this weekend. I tried putting Linux Mint on it first. It booted but had issues (e.g. ethernet wasn't detected -- although WiFi worked fine); seems like the 6.8 kernel is too old. I've got Fedora on it instead now, and that seems to be working better so far.

  • Wasn't aware of that one, but I did hear about the bird with a baguette...

    • Politician: We're going to use AI to predict crimes.
    • AI: That politician is currently committing a crime! Arrest him immediately!
    • Politician: We are discontinuing the use of AI to predict crimes. The technology is clearly not ready yet...
  • the price of a PostNord stamp jumped to 29 Danish krone ($4.55; £3.35) per letter.

No wonder no one is sending mail there.

  • Takopi's Original Sin - I should warn you this one is kind of hard to watch

I've seen the first couple episodes and while I'll definitely be finishing it, yeah... it's right up there with Grave of the Fireflies.

    Thanks for the suggestions!

  • I've heard of a few of those, but most are new to me. I'll look into them -- thanks for the suggestions!

  • Catching up on AOT is definitely on my PTW. Makeine is already on there as well. I've seen Monogatari up through Nisemonogatari; will probably get back to it eventually. Not familiar with SHOSHIMIN -- will look into it, thanks!

Is the NieR Automata adaptation still worth watching if I'm already very familiar with the game (e.g. I got all 27 endings)? I've watched the first episode of it, and while it looked like a solid adaptation I wasn't sure if I'd get anything new out of it.

  • Not really on genre -- I'll watch a bit of everything.

I tend to prefer shows that have a strong continuity between episodes, and that'll grab you and make you binge the rest of the show (or at least the arc) in one go though. The 2nd half of Steins;Gate, Erased, Shin Sekai Yori, A Place Further Than The Universe, Mai-HiME, FMA, Madoka Magica, ATLA, etc. worked for me.

Preference also towards shows where the characters are not in high school (although that's not a deal breaker). e.g. more Shirobako, Planetes, Samurai Champloo, please!

  • So... my situation has changed a bit recently, and, for better or worse, I've got (convenient) access to Crunchyroll through at least the end of the year. I've barely seen anything new since 2020. I'm going through some of the obviously popular stuff from the last few years like Bocchi, Frieren, Nagatoro, Spy x Family, etc. that's entered my awareness mostly through memes. Just finished Mushoku Tensei and currently watching Apothecary Diaries. Open to suggestions.

    • Steam Deck w/ official Dock
    • IOGEAR GCS1104 (4-port DVI KVM)
    • generic HDMI-to-DVI cable
    • Wireless (RF) headphones -- compatible with Sony TMR-RF912R transmitter; not sure on specific headphone model (it's the one that came with the transmitter, but I can't read the model number on the headphones any more since it's too old)
    • a generic 1920x1080 monitor with DVI input + keyboard + mouse
    • XBox360 controller w/ official wireless PC adapter (USB)

I got the KVM used in good condition. It's an older model -- but I went with it anyway since it was a drop-in replacement for my 2-port setup and getting it used was much cheaper than their newer models. The newer ones support higher resolution/frame rates though, I think; I know this one won't do frame rates above 60FPS properly even though my monitor is capable of it when plugged in directly.

There's a few quirks with this setup. Probably most annoying is that moving the mouse typically causes computers to wake from sleep (like pressing a key on a keyboard normally does...); I think there's a way to mask that event off with udev rules but, eh, even a decade or so after getting the original 2-port KVM I haven't cared enough to actually bother working it out, so I guess it's not that big of an issue to me... :p

  • I upgraded my KVM switch recently to one with more ports (from 2 to 4). I used to have to get up and physically rewire the audio and switch the video input selection on my monitor when I wanted to use it instead of my main Linux desktop or ancient Win7 PC before. Now that I can just type a couple keystrokes to switch back and forth I'm actually using my Deck way more often...

  • The OpenAI logo clenches shut...

  • I go rummaging through Bandcamp occasionally and might pitch in with some posts once in a while if you start/find one.

  • Digital Renal Management

...simultaneously rolled out with Digital Rectal Management, of course.

  • I wonder if anyone has ever passed messages between spacecraft as a peculiar form of delay line memory -- or pinged a satellite at a predictable distance as part of a timing system...

    • Preferred: DRM-free download (e.g. GOG, JAST)
    • Will consider: Steam (if not encumbered with evil crap like Denuvo, Enigma, Ubisoft/EA shitware, ...) -- rarely preferred in some cases (e.g. the game is stupidly big)

That's it. Those are the only ways I buy games in practice in 2025. (The last time I bought a physical copy of a game was pre-COVID...)

I have a Steam Deck and an ancient (offline-only) Win7 computer that is surprisingly still usable. If I can't run a game on one of those, it might as well not exist as far as I'm concerned.
