  • I agree, LG is a pretty awful brand all around but I really like the idea of new lighter materials used in consumer hardware. Moving away from plastics to metal frames has been nothing but a fashion mistake.

  • Hong Kong is a small tax haven - Taiwan is a full independent country. I really think we've past the point where physical annexation can work with guerilla warfare and sabotage being so easily accessible in this day and age. I think CCP agrees that's why it'll take a decade to wear Taiwan down still

  • China has some really big domestic issues right now with record unemployment rates so naturally their drumming up nationalism to distract people. Though AI boom is carrying China through and I really hope they back down.

From what I see on Tiktok right now the propaganda machine is in full swing. Every video on Taiwan is spammed by bots saying "Taiwan is China". With Taiwan's opposition blocking defense budget it 100% seems like China will go through political offense first before invading.

  • I don't think your personal anecdote is grounded in any meaningful reality. Laptop tech has been mostly solved for better part of a decade now and even cheap aliexpress laptops are built well enough to hold for years.

  • Most non-gaming laptops since 2010 don't really make noticeable noise

  • Honest question - why do you prefer this?

There's nothing bleeding edge in cars these days except for security and drive train features. I have 2 cars - new EV and 15 year old economy Toyota and honestly aside from drive train itself there's nothing I can find in the new car that makes me feel like my old car is missing something important.

Car technology has stagnated so bad that "deny list" approach makes no sense since the innovation potential is so incredibly poor. We lose safety and uniform UX for what? Fashion? It's kinda stupid.

  • Good, it's such an incredibly stupid design. Literally no one was bothered by a slight handle for better UX.

  • Oh wow so it's not even 35 usd of actual value. Crazy

  • Apparently personal data was only worth 35 usd in vouchers lol

We've seen awful practices in data breach compensation but this feels like satire

  • It makes huge difference. I'm on Fold since Fold 4 and would never go back to a slab phone mostly because I just read books or text web/social media. The square display is perfect for this as you get proper 80-120 character lines with large font and enough space for media etc.

  • Sometimes I day dream how cool free China would actually be

  • I'm confused - this seems like idiomatic way to add new features in activity pub? What's actually missing here?

  • It's a flaw of empires in general. They become this pervasive machine where ends always justify the means and there's just too much power and slow rare of change. Just a bad system no matter how you look at it.

  • Yay CCP is slightly less cruel than a medieval monarch

  • TLD is 5$ per year - the decision is purely vanity and nothing about this is smart or practical.

  • But that's not conservatism per se, it's just fascism

  • it actually stands for country of Mali but tankies are right there engaging in imperialism and failing to see the irony lol

The best part. ML losers got the domain because "paying 5$ a year for TLD is capitalism!" and then in 2023 free .ml domains were discontinued because surprise surprise - it was a stupid idea lmao

What a bunch of mega losers lemmy.ml is.

  • I call them mega losers

  • I feel like "conservatism" has lost all rationality. I do get that it's totally possible that "not rocking the boat" could be a good solution to society's progress for some niches but 99% of the time it's absolutely irational.

In fact, most conservative issues like "traditional family unit", "gun freedom" are better approached through progressive frame like incentives to celebrate local culture and protecting human rights like rights to self defence - these are fundamentally progressive thoughts that actually solve the issue in a real meaningful way rather than just hiding behind in-action.

I really try to understand conservatism as a thought movement but there seems to be no actual thought behind it. I genuinely don't get it.
