The story so far: In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

It doesn't matter when exactly it "started". The question should be how we get out of it. Or, more fundamentally, what actually is the problem, fundamentally? Is it a bunch of racists and bigots abusing a corrupt system to inch the US (well, we do have it in Europe too, just not so extreme yet) ever closer to fascism, or is it the underlying system of escalating exploitation and conflict that enables them?
