  • PieFed looks fantastic, but I wish there was a seamless way to migrate to it from Lemmy - I spent a LOT of time customizing my feed, blocking some communities, subscribing to others, that sort of thing, and I honestly don't feel like doing it all from scratch...

Actually, Is there a way to automate it in some way? Probably not, since PF is structured differently, right?

  • Exactly. I'm almost fucking fifty, maybe that's why I find this patronizing tone so annoying, get off my lawn and all... ;)

  • The infantilization of error messages annoys me to no end. Sure Error: exception FF02345A0 in module flarghbhgy.py is not immediately helpful, but at least it allows me to search for a solution or a cause. Recently though, a frighteningly large portion of software developers decided for some reason that Oopsie poopsie, someone made a boo boo is a better error message, especially if it's accompanied by a cute whimsical image of a kitten or some shit...

  • That, and every replaced book should have a big dedication inside, saying something like "purchased with a generous donation of Mr [this twit's name]"

  • He has too little mental capacity left, so he simply parrots whatever the last person he talked to said to him. He also has no opinions or stances of his own, so he's trivial to manipulate: just find the last person who talked to him while stroking his ego and you'll know whose words these are, because they are not Trump's...

  • I hear a lot of people, mostly (if not exclusively) from the right side of the political scene refer to different things as "satanic" or "demonic", but how on earth do you not look at ghouls like Gaetz or Miller without wondering if they are not actually hellspawn feeding on human suffering? It's really like they need it for sustenance, so they aim to create as much suffering as they can to never go hungry again...

  • No reason to apologize - that was a great, thoughtful writeup, you make some great points, and I enjoyed reading it a lot! I'll probably need to re-read it a bit more slowly to make sure I fully absorb it, but it was a great read nonetheless!

I'm looking at the US from the outside, luckily, but I see it to a lesser extent in other countries too - the rise of painfully stupid, violent rhetoric, the rampant anti-intellectualism, people being proud of their ignorance... And I just don't want to see (much less experience) the massive amount of suffering it will inevitably bring. Perhaps I am overdramatic with the "point of no return for humanity," but the self-correction you mention will indeed be a rough one, and intakes me really sad. There's very little I can do about it though, so I guess I just need to help people close by that I can help, and accept that things will have to get much worse before they gett better :/

  • Yet another result of a failed education system and proliferation of idiotic conspiracy theories through social media...

I sound (and feel) more and more defeatist every day, but seriously, is there anything that can realistically be done to prevent further spread of idiocracy at this stage? Are we beyond the point of no return as a species? It's depressing...

  • I much prefer the term "acting your wage". I'm not doing the bare minimum - I'm doing what I'm paid for. You want me to do more? Guess what, there's one way to motivate me to do so...

  • And yet again, he suddenly cares about truth and ethics now, because something directly and negatively affects him...

How do you deal with people like that? Is there a way to make them understand that empathy is not actually a weakness and helping others is important and good, even if it doesn't benefit you personally at that very moment?

  • Because that's what it's all about - someone else suffering more. The objective is to increase the amount of suffering in the world, since we clearly don't have enough of it just yet, but making sure others suffer more than us. Because trying to make it so that everyone suffers less is communist, unamerican and bad, I guess...

  • they figured he would “shake things up” and/or change things.

Well, sure, but in this case it's like getting annoyed at the soup always being too salty at the cafeteria, and switching to cat diarrhea instead... Sure, it does "shake things up" and it may even be less salty, but come on...

  • I used to roll my eyes at all the "sheeple" comments, but to be honest, looking at what's happening in the US recently and seeing how many people just capitulate to the bullies I'm not so sure anymore... It's just really sad and depressing :(

  • Or a manager of a china (as in porcelain) shop. "Yeah, I'm the president of China... and fine dining utensils incorporated in Chattanooga Tennessee"

  • Next, let's make locks and window blinds illegal too - how can big brother protect us and fight crime if they can't see what we're doing 24/7? Also, why are people criminals putting letters in envelopes - do they have something to hide? Big brother should be able to read all mail too, any time he feels like it. It's all for our own good and to fight crime after all!

  • He absolutely did and does, no doubt about it. But it's him suffering going to fix any of that or improve the lives of people he and his goons destroyed? I don't know what to think about it, it's too philosophical for my small monkey brain...

  • Sure, but doesn't that make you (and me too, since I actually grinned and felt really good about this initially) very similar to him and US republicans in general? Celebrating the "right people" being hurt?

I don't have an answer, I find it super hard to not hate the other side, but I don't think it's healthy or productive, and it doesn't really help anyone... Having said that, it does feel like at least the beginning of just punishment, doesn't it? I just wish people stopped being total dicks to each other and we didn't have to punish anyone... :(

  • I try to not be happy when people suffer, because I believe we should all be working to reduce suffering for everyone and not increase it for others (even if they are "those people"), but sometimes it's really hard...

  • So when are republicans changing the plaque on the Statue of Liberty to say

“Get out you tired, you poor,

You huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to El Salvador,

I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

because the current one is way to woke and liberal?
