random bald, fat, middle-aged Brazillian guy

  • The kind of oil extracted in Venezuela is called heavy crude, it's not easily refined anywhere, needs some kind of special processes. IIRC a lot of it was processed in the USA itself before sanctions took place during the Deranged Orange Man's first term.

  • The oil was headed to Iran and Russia.

    Those two countries export oil.

  • Given enough time and an enormous budget it’s inevitable any determined organization could make it.

    This kind of milestone isn't reachable by most countries in the world mostly because of the price tag attached to it

  • South Americans must be some of the dumbest mother fuckers on the planet.

    FTFY

  • This is how you fight the war against the elite. Not with guns, but with wallets that refuse to open. They can’t take our money unless we agree to buy their goods.

    No, this cannot work. Their wallets are much, much bigger than almost all of ours combined.

  • why stop there, let's dismantle ALL big tech while we're at it

  • Can yt-dlp download Udemy courses?

    Found this, not sure if it works because I'm not enrolled in any course ATM, feel free to try it out

  • If you still have over £1 Billion in your bank account, we take everything above a billion so you end up with £1 Billion again so we can spend it on things like infrastructure.”

    Even if it was feasible to implement something like that -- it isn't because Congress has been bought by rich folks since it began -- what would really happen is that money would artificially circulate between a few hands in the big boy's club, and nothing would really change.

  • Yeah, PPAs usually complicate things. IIRC the advice is disabling them before upgrading major versions, but this can be a pain if you use many repositories simultaneously

  • Something that really improved my life was learn to properly use find, grep, xargs and sed. Besides that, there are these two little 'hacks' that are really handy at times...

    1- find out which process is using some local port (i.e. the modern netstat replacement):

    $ ss -ltnp 'sport = :<port-number>'

    2- find out which process is consuming your bandwidth:

    $ sudo nethogs

  • I count myself as one of the lucky ones that isn't forced to use Windows by the company I work for. We even have our internal (ubuntu-based) distro, and despite being passable proficient with Linux, I can count on having support if I ever need it.

    That’s all fine and dandy but at work I am forced to use Windows, Office, Teams, and all that.

    Yeah, me too. But all of those (except Windows of course) can be used on the browser

  • I always broke it before long, but that is the Ubuntu curse

    There is a Mint based on pure Debian if you think the Ubuntu-based one is "too fragile" as you put it. You actually made me curious in how you keep breaking Mint, I've been using it for several years, incrementally upgrading it since 2021 with little to no breakage at all.

  • Maybe this is not so outlandish if you consider the slow sliding to far-right across all of Europe in the lasf few years. Fascists standing together, and all that.

  • I feel you, I'm in the same boat

    it would be cool if there was something like the Game Boy Magnifier for those modern systems

  • I mean, the Marshall Plan was benevolent.

    No, it wasn't. It was meant to stop the URSS from expanding further west, and as a bonus shackle the rebuild countries as loyal lapdogs that attended to any and every USA whim.

    USAID and similar may make us net beneficial to Africa.

    Mostly posturing. If the USA were serious about benefitting Africa they'd do something similar to what China is doing right now, partnering and building infrastructure, instead merciless exploitation and throwing a few breadcrumbs here and there.

    Let’s not talk about South America.

    But we should. What the USA has done here can only be labelled as evil. Overthrowing governments left and right, supporting murderous dictatorships, merciless exploitation like what it did in Africa as well. Foul, evil stuff.

  • Russia too developed hypersonic missiles exactly to counter that very same American strategy

    IIRC the russians were buying hypersonic missiles from Iran

  • How often do people leave reviews?

    Speaking only for myself, I only leave a review if I loved or I hated a game. A "meh" game doesn't get a review. I'd hazard that many people do something similar.

  • I kinda agree with you. I don’t use retro achievements because I'm an obsessed completionist. That means that I'd keep playing one game well beyond the point it stopped being fun just to tick all those boxes.
