I used to use pidgin for our corporate HipChat. Pidgin was the best client for HipChat. I especially liked the psychic plugin, so I could get notified as soon as someone began composing a message to me (well before they sent the message).
I wrote a small python script to send my phone a high-priority message alert whenever my boss began composing a message to me. This was especially useful when I was in the kitchen or doing laundry or something.
We lost so much when these shitty corporate messaging services went so far off the XMPP spec that we couldn't use third party clients anymore
They don't. I'm telling you they don't. When I disable my ad blocker, the ads I see are not relevant to me. Many times they're not even in a language that I can speak.
They are not tracking me between sessions. Its obvious.
What you're saying makes sense, and its why Tor does what it does. But in practice, this works too.
There are no tools that you need to pay for that are not free as gratis or libre.
But I would be OK with only charging for software that's not libre. So software thats gratis but not libre doesn't dock you, since you're contributing to something good that helps the world
Fuck Lockheed and everything they ever did
