  • That was actually the one I had in mind

  • Surely, but the difference is that China isn't going in with the express intent of creating a debt trap to leverage poor countries to adopt austerity. They're not saints, but it turns out that being 100x better than the IMF is a very low bar, like being more ethical than the CIA.

  • Oh, they certainly do, but their ulterior motives aren't "see if we can grind poor people into cash powder", like the IMF's is.

  • They're pretty okay for shallow understanding on a subject, but Wendover (not on the list), Economics Explained (not on the list), and CGP gray all get stuff pretty wrong once you get past shallow depth. I know because I'm a huge transit/urbanism nerd. If these channels haven't wronged you in some minor way, they just haven't talked about something you're a subject matter expert in yet. The point here isn't that they're bad, just understand that these are shallow explainers, the next step in from like a news article, Wikipedia, or a blog, and take them with a grain of salt.

My personal list is Kurzgesagt, XKCD explained, and The Action Lab.

  • "Okay, I'll inspect your genitals, drop 'em and we'll prove it to everyone"

  • This really isn't different than the IMF, except I imagine China isn't going to be leveraging their debt to convince poor countries to wage economic warfare against its poorest citizens and do massive giveaways to the foreign and domestic wealthy.

Fuck the IMF, all my homies hate the IMF.

  • I love this. This is a really good, simple, impactful strategy.

  • Good luck calling them already. A lot of services make it flat out impossible to talk to a human.

  • About the only thing keeping me off Sony is that they've got a really bad star eater problem in their DSLRs, and even still somewhat in their mirrorless.

  • Well, shit. I was planning on getting a Canon for my first camera because it's hard to beat them for astrophotography, but I'm less sure now.

  • Get alienated, idiot

  • Can't recommend a shotgun enough.

  • Nah, we need politicians to be able to feel fear, imo. If they never have to think "will this come back to haunt me?" then that's going to enable a lot of awful shit.

  • That might actually work in some cases, since a lot of CA cities are criss-crossed with little irrigation canals. Most of what I'm pushing for, though, is putting our streets on a road diet by converting over wide or extra lanes into hardened bike lanes.

  • We can't really control what the city engineers or council do, it's an advisory commission, and something more robust would well exceed the budget that the city has allocated for the project I'm talking about. We're trying to get a win where we can right now, but we've added an agenda item to recommend a minimum standard for bike lanes so that they'll all be built with some kind of hardening.

  • This one hurt

  • Me, an American: yeah, and?

  • I can instantly convert roads into corresponding rail transit lines. Highways to heavy rail, city arterials to light rail, sub arterials to grams, and interstates to high speed rail, etc.
