  • I have an old laptop running it since a year ago. It's getting there. If you use it long enough, you will still regularly stumble on little things that are nicer to use on gnome or kde but it's getting there. I plan on switching my primary desktop to it for the 26.04 release

  • He can start a new ice cream company. There's got to be at least a dozen national brands and dozens of regional ice cream

  • When I was 5 I also liked the leafy broccoli part. Tolerated just a bit of the stem

  • 5 years of higher than usual inflation and tariffs. The prices actually aren't far off inflation adjustment from 2020. Xbox as a console brand is done. Switch 2 for party games. PlayStation is you really need a high end console. Everyone else should be trying to embrace 1920x1080 or 2560x1080 PC gaming. GTX 1060 6gb still solid for most new games at 1080p. Low settings rarely look bad these days when you have to go low

If you really want 4k, embrace medium settings

  • Shout-out to every dumbass that thought just because that bill to give the president to unilaterally designate companies as foreign companies national security threats and ban them was being passed during a democratic party Presidency, that meant the ACLU and EFF were wrong and this was actually a good thing. The most popular easily abusable legislation of the past ten years.

Don't support government powers that you wouldn't want your opposition to possess. They will be in power someday, bet on that no matter what. Especially stupid stupid after 2020 Portland federal law enforcement disappearing people it should have been clear that the powers of the executive should have been limited before it was going to inevitably be in the power of opposition again but nope, Tiktok bad because China makes us feel insecure.

Stupid bill and stupid people that were, I know ACLU and EFF are against it but TikTok needs to be banned, dumbasses - a bill can be written that targets a single company rather than a blanket power to block out any company from that selection of countries. Of course now that it is law, a willing congress - an inevitability - can remove the country specifics or add any and for some reason dumbasses after 2020 were like - it won't be abused

  • It's not a knock on everyone. It's just what I've noticed in my life with the military, in civilian DoD and contracting, those I know working at the VA. The ones with serious medical issues are very noticeable but there's a huge amount of people that did 4 years, saw no combat, not even seen the desert in Qatar or Bahrain, but got themselves to like 70-100% disability rating and will see major benefits for life. Various states give discounts on property taxes and whatever else they squeeze through throughout election seasons

It's a very unpopular opinion of mine but I hold it. Military benefits are sacrosanct along with the defense budget so they can never be lowered unless the US accepts a role as a regional power rather than a global power and/or it's GDP starts to flatline or declines adjusted for inflation making debt payments a larger percentage of GDP. Someone who's most trialing duty station being Stuttgart can get 100% disability and it's smart on them to do so but it's definitely an anchor on the country's ability to finance a potential war against Russia, China, or I'd say even Iran would be incredibly problematic.

US casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan are not close to Korea or Vietnam but the financial cost is far greater. It is morally good to take care of veterans but it's not something that will get major scrutiny because of political optics. Screw insurance companies but would private insurance companies determine disability ratings like the VA? Radar technician in Sacramento, air force tech in Colorado - you can get a high disability rating and go on to work full time without issue. It's a lax system attractive for abuse. There's probably an in between between the VA and private insurers that would be more sustainable and accurate. Maybe it should be a lot closer to SSDI

  • Welcoming Ameripoors to the Europoors. It's a downslope for both regardless though.

Americans for spending so much on wars and veteran benefits that are abused at historic levels as social media taught people how to get to or near 100% disability ratings and lawyers specialized in getting high disability ratings for their clients before even getting to maintaining the huge amount of aging naval and air force equipment

Europeans for likely needing to dedicate higher portions of their GDPs to defense spending in anticipation of less US funding, less commitment of personnel, and less equipment for anti-Russia defense. That too possibly leading to the abusable military enlistment packages and contract shenanigans for onshoring defense R&D

People aren't getting 3 bedrooms in their 20s and upgrading to 4+ bedrooms in their 30s for 3+ children. Their parents had them older. And then they're having kids, if even, older than their parents. Grandparents deep into their 60s into their 70s aren't babysitter energy like late 40 into their early 50s grandparents. I don't care how walkable a community is, the whole village raising a child seems less common across the world compared to the past so that's not a well understood how to do solution and the walkable community countries often cited don't have replacement rate birth rates

  • I put the base at 5 years being optimistic. I'm not expecting 5 years from final spec publishing. A stable spec is released end of the year so pretty much 2026. Take a couple years for hardware decoders to start releasing in niche to expensive gear. Pretty much demonstrative gear.

Then progressively decoders proliferate down to consumer gear with years to get down to cheap entry level gear. Keep in mind the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 this year was the first 7 series chip to get an AV1 hardware decoder. Don't know about Snapdragon 6 and 4 series of chips. AV1 stable spec was like 2018

Maybe AV2 adoption will be quicker because VVC seems to have garnered minimal interest since 2020. However long it takes, you'll be itching for a new computer by then. Lessons learned from what adoption took for AV1 for AV2 development. Regardless, content distribution will trail hardware decode adoption on mass media devices, phones - maybe even have to wait for people to replace their televisions with ones that have AV2 decoders in them

  • I know there's a lot of focus on the US today, even more than usual but I'm getting very concerned about every other countries domestic swing towards conservative populism that's generally intertwined with racism mixed in the current anti-immigration movements.

This is good. I absolutely think it's a problem for every country to have foreign ownership of land/property. It ranges from champagne socialist to hyper-capitalist doing foreign land/property purchases. Screw vacation homes. Screw rental properties. Regardless of all that, don't let anti-Americanism distract you from growing conservative populism that's been growing across the world for I feel like the whole 25 years of this millennium

  • Don't sweat it. By the time AV2 starts getting serious adoption rolled out, your hardware will be 5+ years old

  • I prefer smaller scale remakes rather than like FFVII. The art here works for me. It's not standout. It doesn't have the same amount of charm to it. Maybe all too clean. The one in Romancing Saga 2 looked pretty generic but at least it wasn't a game that required a huge amount of sales to break even. Still charming

  • This will just motivate Venezuela to hurry around their military modernization effort possibly with a lot more public support than before

  • Don't buy gearbox games. Pitchford is a self important head in the sands salesman. Along with Tim Sweeny, they're a couple of the most used car salesman types in gaming

  • Got to love the political post failure book industry

  • You can make the meme for most countries in the west. The past couple days have been us celebrating the latest Banksy performative protest as if that's done anything more than be more art in the ocean of art to be snooty about socially and continue on with the ever weak art based protest. 30 years of performative art centric leftist culture and 30 years of neoliberalism shifting further and further to the right

  • it's been asked a lot and I've seen others respond about how the passcode and account username that were added in the last few years are steps in the process to make accounts not dependent on phone numbers. I've just given them the benefit of the doubt that someday we won't be tied to a phone number anymore

  • The advantage for vendors will be a wider selection of processor choices and the possibility for the large players to use their own chips however much of it the result of licensed IP. Applies to ARM and RISC-V. Also Intel and AMD both being US companies making modern international politics of self reliance important

  • It's not a real replacement but if you want to support open source stuff, fossify apps including the launcher. Users and support will get it improving faster. On F-Droid and google Play store
