"you thought you did something there, didn't you?"

  • gotta say I've actually been pleased with Lemmy moderation so far. First time I got moderated I think was one of the admin peeps from my instance telling me to take a chill pill, which was fair and appreciated. And I think that's probably similar for the couple other times I've been actioned so far. I can't complain, FAFO, and mod/admin peeps seem pretty chill and level-headed about it. I only wish I could say the same about reddit mods, before a bunch of them became Iana's sexist minions. But so far the Lemmy communities I've wandered into don't seem to have that problem quite yet which is refreshing.

Also for any ex-reddit mods reading this: if you find IDU/turtle/poodle on the fediverse, avoid them. I will not hesitate to go scorched earth should I have another encounter with them. Otherwise, should we never cross paths again, I'm prepared to let it all go, since they did manage to convince myself and at least dozens of others suspectible to The Pipelines to leave Reddit.

  • I think it would rely more on fear factor. Like they put someone under for what feels like 2 months, so they are on the brink of giving up hope, then pull em out and go "alright now we'll assess you're status and determine whether to put you back in for 10 years"

I speculate it wouldn't work on a variety of people though, as their brain could already be adjusted to altered time perception through the use of drugs. Even without hard drugs or Adderall, you can still fuck with your time perception using only weed and sugar (the food-- as in drink four cans of cola and get super baked immediately, then set 15 minute timers and get lost in your own head, see how long each of those 15 minutes feel)

  • Are you his son?

  • Bear belongs just left of appletini, and vodka with mango juice belongs where beer is.

Vodka straight? Probably a healthy hatred for self and others. Mixed with juice? Now that person knows how to live a happy ass life.

Seriously, if you've a bad drinking habit, vodka and mango juice. You'll crave alcohol less, you're hangovers will be barely noticeable and pleasant, tastes great, is better for you than beers or rum and soda. Plus people will think you're classy AF once you've learned to make a bunch of simple and pleasant cocktails.

Don't waste your time with any of that dirty shit like Smirnoff. Buy something clean like Reyka or don't bother.

  • To me it depends on how hard you work and game, and by that I just mean how you posture yourself over a keyboard and how actively/frantically you interface with a computer.

My posture is shit despite spending up to 14 hours a day in front of a computer. It's still ways better than that of someone who hunches over their keyboard staring dead at their big ass monitor with their fingers locked in over the QE+WASD button group as they zone in to get that "flick" response time.

Meanwhile, my shitty posture is just lounging or reclining in my ergo chair as I swivel my neck to look at any of my three eye-level monitors. I shift around a lot and my hands aren't near the keyboard unless I'm actively typing. I crack my neck and roll my shoulders often, sometimes stretch or go take a 15-minute walk. I only use dark themes and always have proper ambient lighting to prevent concentrated light exposure fucking up my eyesight.

I have been keeping this technophiliac routine going for about 5 years now. Depression, Severe General Anxiety/Paranoia, Alcoholism, Substance Abuse (weed), Over-eating, Serial Dating and unexplained bouts of mania were all problems I had to deal with during those five years. Some of them may have been amplified by this routine computer use but certainly not caused by it, I've identified the true causes for almost all of them and, aside from depression, they have nothing to do with sitting in front of screens all day.

There are much bigger issues associated with computer use and the media's failure to report on them speaks volumes. Stop attacking the video games that aren't predatory (keep going after the ones that are) and start really really taking a look at the effects of social media. Social media will destroy society long before video games get a chance to.

I stand by this statement, to the grave: Death to Social Media.

  • Every awkward fascist, sexist turtle will be gathered into an imaginary pot and cooked alive for all to see. The aroma and broth will be delectable.

If you have no idea what any of this means and no idea why I don this weird username, then I kindly implore you stay out of it for sake of your own sanity. Otherwise, lmk and I'll begrudgingly curse you with knowledge of the tale of a particularly disgraceful misanthrope and an even worse excuse for a human being.

  • Buddy. I'm not talking about consumer equipment. I'm talking about enterprise equipment that costs more than your car. Step off.

And yes, I know planned obsolescence is a thing in enterprise. But that doesn't mean your enterprise customer won't make purchasing decisions based on the quality of such small components. We refuse to order from HPE, to give you an idea of how we take this sort of thing. We know what we're buying and how to use it and if we can't properly maintain it because the vendor is an asshat, we'll find a new vendor because fuck you we can't afford to put up with your shenanigans.

  • There is one screw on this chart that I have a mortal hatred for. Just one. That being the fat Phillips (called "Phillips/square" on this chart meme thing).

I have no idea why, but some companies can't resist the sadistic urge to put tiny versions of these fuckers on equipment that should just use a torque or Phillips screw head. But no, they want you to truly suffer. Because they don't stop there: they make the fragile little fuckers out of NICKEL. Which means they are extra malleable and prone to strip if you so much as look at them the wrong way. So imagine you need to replace a hard drive on a RAID-type storage pool that's already down two spares and you can't fucking get the drive out of it's sled because the vendor not only hired a bodybuilder to tighten the screws, but simultaneously chose the worst possible metal just for giggles and chose the screw head that they no body will have the proper bit for and will inevitably use a normal phillips on until it strips.

I now have a ritual procedure of putting every drive that gets replaced in the coldest cold aisle in the datacenter for at least 5 minutes just to make these fucking screws less likely to ruin my day.

Fuck whoever invented the fat phillips, even the lowest ring of hell is too good for them.

  • yeah no I'm not taking that bait, bud.

  • When you say "their picture", you mean to say they just don't like how they are represented on the platform, right? Or do you mean an actual picture of their face? If the latter is the case, then it sounds objectively like y'all were the ones that set the precedent for doxxing. And you should have known they'd be stupid enough to stoop to any challenger's given level and then some. Just saying.

  • But "it" is for inanimate objects

Not quite. "It" is a general reference pronoun with a function akin to "the". It can be used to refer to anything that is a thing, even if said thing is animate and/or living.

When referring indiscriminately to a specimen of fauna, "it" is a linguistically appropriate identifier whereas "they" would only really be entirely appropriate when referring to an individual or subset of individuals, regardless of species or animacy.

Since this fish has no distinguishable identity apart from the cultural impact it may spawn, I reckon it's more appropriate to use "it" but "they" could also work.

I am not a linguist. But if you are, feel free to correct me. If you feel like pretending to be a linguist, go talk to an LLM cause IDC.

  • Oh, gotcha, so you were legit dealing with degen Nazi wannabes. Apologies for doubting you, I shouldn't have made assumptions.

    More power to ya, cheers

  • Could you elaborate? There is more than one mod (previously) on Reddit who is infamous for assigning nasty labels like that to all their dissenters indiscriminately. So thanks to their actions, your use of the distinction of a vocal group as Nazis is uselessly ambiguous. What sub of degens?

  • Both points sort of miss the mark, though the lower one moreso imo.

You don't need and $7 coffee and you don't need a $1200 laptop. You won't die without either. They are conveniences, and relying upon or expecting them is consumerism, a social manipulation tool of capitalism. Nothing is stopping you from directly opposing consumerism through your actions-- you don't need to buy their coffee, you don't need to buy their laptops.

If you're truly against late-stage capitalism, you should be exploring actions you are comfortable taking to disempower it, not complacently feed into it. Maybe make your own coffee, or quit the stuff. Maybe buy an old laptop and install FOSS software on it. Maybe just buy recently-last-gen parts second-hand and build exactly the computer you need for less money than you'd spend on something you only sort of like from a manufacturer whose monopolistic behaviors you disagree with.

All I've got to say in the end is that there are options, and doomer complacency is meaningless and counterproductive.

  • brb taking out a mortgage to bet on the goose

  • I will testify under oath with evidence that Reddit, the company, has not only turned a blind eye to but also encouraged and intentfully enabled radicalization on their platform. It is the entire reason I am on Lemmy. It is the entire reason for my username. It is the reason I questioned my allyship with certain marginalized communities. It is the reason I tense up at the mention of turtles.

  • I'm not a lawyer, but under the definition of "Infrastructure" on page 5, they state that they will construe WhatsApp Infrastructure and Partner Infrastructure accordingly, which to my untrained eye is prima facie evidence to their acknowledgement that these are separate systems, at least one (the Partner's) of which is not under their custodianship and not named as subject of the first stipulation you quoted. In other words "do not make it so WhatsApp's own infrastructure would run GPL material" and potentially "do not send GPL material through our systems"

The second one I interpret to mean "nothing with licenses that apply that runtime operation is copy left"

  • This is not the direct result of a knowledge cutoff date, but could be the result of mis-prompting or fine-tuning to enforce cut off dates to discourage hallucinations about future events.

But, Gemini/Bard has access to a massive index built from Google's web crawling-- if it shows up in a Google search, Gemini/Bard can see it. So unless the model weights do not contain any features that correlate Gaza to being a geographic location, there should be no technical reason that it is unable to retrieve this information.

My speculation is that Google has set up "misinformation guardrails" that instruct the model not to present retrieved information that is deemed "dubious"-- it may decide for instance that information from an AP article are more reputable than sparse, potentially conflicting references to numbers given by the Gaza Health Ministry, since it is ran by the Palestinian Authority. I haven't read too far into Gemini's docs to know what all Google said they've done for misinformation guardrailing, but I expect they don't tell us much besides that they obviously see a need to do it since misinformation is a thing, LLMs are gullible and prone to hallucinations and their model has access to literally all the information, disinformation, and misinformation on the surface web and then some.

TL;DR someone on the Ethics team is being lazy as usual and taking the simplest route to misinformation guardrailing because "move fast". This guardrailing is necessary, but fucks up quite easily (ex. the accidentally racist image generator incident)

  • edit: currently lol'ing at the fact that some of you people out there are so pathetic that you disagree with equality. That's fine, enjoy your sexist lives you ingrates.

All I've got to say is that I might begin to take female domestic abuse victims with a grain of salt if I've any suspicion they would treat male victims similarly. Because to many victims, it is obvious that it can happen to anyone and be perpetrated by anyone, regardless of gender of either. But if they say men can't be abused, that just tells me that they have never experienced abuse and removes any credibility from anything they could possibly say about the subject.
