  • There are reason for them asking about an extra bedroom. And that is at some point, something will happen and they can no longer work at anything. For example, as much as I would still like to do something to do, I can no longer physically work. Even though I can still do things, ain't no one going to hire me to even be a greeter at Walmart.....

    Nor do people want to survive and die in a nursing home. It's not a good place to die. We recently went through this 4 years ago with my Wife's Father. Fortunately, we have/had the skills to care for someone at end of life. And we gave up our lives to do so. And he was able to die peacefully at home.

    Whether or not you choose to do something similar is completely up to you and your family.

  • E911 is a thing in some places and not in others depending on what each county dispatch wants to do and pay for. It does require some call center upgrades as I recall when I was working EMS and fire. It was kind of sketchy when I was working. But, everything is a bit sketchy when working in a very rural area in public safety.

  • I think GM tried with the Chevy Bolt. It was the cheapest EV with good range, (265 miles/426km), with a base model available for under $30,000US. Despite the early battery issues that DID get fixed, No one bought it. Chevy does kind of say they would be willing to bring it back with their new Ultium battery. But I'm not holding my breath.

    The biggest problem with EVs is the purchase price. They cost far too much to buy. And there is not much of a market for used ones.

  • There is a tiny, tiny kernel of truth in that statement. And by in large, regardless of political beliefs, most people want a strong central government applying top down solutions to their problems. (Which can have it's own set of unintended issues)

    An example might be single payer health care. A majority of voters would really like it. But it's one thing to say that and get it passed. But it's another whole ball of worms to create the nuts and bolts of such a system. Everyone has their own ideas about how it should work. And until you can get everyone to agree on the nuts and bolts in a democracy there will be difficulties. So unless you have the outright power, (something not so "democratic"), to say "This is how we are going to do it", you are going to probably end up with a gridlocked discussion and no healthcare. And if someone does have that power to force the answer - even it you don't like it - your democracy isn't what you think it is.

  • This drone attack by Iran may have more to do with "showing" it's little vassal terrorist groups it's prodding and bankrolling into doing Iran's dirty work that Iran is "doing" something militarily in support of Hamas and the Houthi.

    What is a drone strike that is going to take 8 to 10 hours to arrive supposed to accomplish when it's so easy to spot coming well ahead of time. It's not like Iran doesn't have missiles that can hit Israel in a handful of minutes if Iran really wanted to do damage.

  • I recently wiped my Nitro5 of Windows 11 and now I'm currently using Kubuntu while waiting for the Fedora 40 release. I think I'm going to try the Plasma spin, (Fedora always seems to end badly for me though).

    I was reasonably satisfied with Win11 when I first upgraded to it. It ran smoothly and was easy to setup the way I wanted it. It basically stayed pretty much out of my way. But the last "upgrade" put an end to that. I wrestled with the last service pack, and got pissed and wiped it.

    Now I'm just waiting for Fedora 40 to drop along with Ubuntu 24.04LS. I will pick a KDE spin that seems to run the best.

  • As someone my mid 60's, you've been around enough to have learned some things. Start thinking about what you will leave behind on the day you die. What is it that you can do to leave a mark on this world? It doesn't need to be large and grandiose. Even if you only affect one person for the better, it's a win.

    I went from being a farmer to a toolmaker to a ME. And like you, I discovered that while I was accomplished in those fields, it meant very little in the grand scheme. So I became a volunteer firefighter, which lead to me eventuality becoming medic. When I became too old for that, I looked around and found a need in my local school for me to teach. I discovered community service was what I could leave a legacy in.

    And when I do finally pass beyond this vale of tears, I will leave behind a legacy that will live on through the people I comforted though the worst moments of their lives. And also the hopeful seeds I have tried to plant in the future generation. It was never meant to be great or fancy. Just a few simple efforts for me to be satisfied with.

    What will you leave behind?
