  • You are so right about those terminals. I hate them with a passion too.

  • Value for money is the heart of the problem. The quality has been declining for a good while now. I enjoy the occasional junk food meal on the rare times I need to travel. And McDonalds was almost always been my choice. But it's been a long time since I have even considered them for that quick stop and go meal.

Inflation or not, I will look for the value I get. I ain't getting it at McDonalds anymore.

  • As a retired medic who has has to deal with my share of the mentally ill, I will try to add a little context perhaps.

What got them to enter the apartment is they probably realized they were dealing with a mentally ill person who was not properly on their meds, (we can't say for sure at this point - but it's as likely as not), and they then started what should have been a simple welfare check. Which can entail entry to observe the person and the general living conditions. Cops do welfare checks everyday, multiple times a day. The next step if they determine there is a problem, is to request medical assistance, an ambulance, to deal with the person. The cops are to remain in scene and assist if needed - i.e. help talk the patient into seeking medical help or sometimes stop an assault on EMS. But that's what SHOULD have happened.

Instead a straight up murder was committed.

  • I wonder if the 'Black' part means less to the republican party than her being a pretty competent woman. I can see Harris pulling a LOT of single issue woman voters over the abortion rights issue. And that scares the republican party. It would kill the down ticket vote as well.

  • Ahhhh, the Technology Trap. The modern world has become a mere handful of bad zeros away from having this house of cards crash down and kill almost everyone.

Technology is great and makes our modern society comfy and great. But it also can be the Sword of Damocles. When will that slender thread break and kill us all?

  • Welcome to the Dark Side! Mint is a very good choice in disto. I admire the stability, usability, and having just enough wiggle room to let me set things up to my taste. You are going to like Mint!

  • You don't kick the box because it hurts more. If people would only wear the proper steel toe computing shoes more crap computers would get their just desserts.

  • As an old and retired medic, I've done my share of "accidents". There wasn't a single time that I stepped out of my amp-a-lamps and surveyed a scene that I couldn't see the point where someone(s) got stupid. And then things went sidways after that. There is lots of stupid in this world.

There are no accidents. Just people doing stupid things.

  • Remember when the IoT was very new? There were similar grumblings of "Why would I want talk to my refridgerator?" And now more and more things are just IoT connected for no reason.

I suspect AI will follow as similar path into the consumer mainstream.

  • You haven't seen much of the US from ground level have you. There are more and more panel farms being built on good farm land. Sizes ranging from 10 to 40 acres at a time from all the ones I've seen.

It might seem small to you, but it does add up.

  • Yeah, when it comes time to do tillage, that's WILL constrain the directions you can till the ground. Generally, you really want to till at an angle to the direction of planting to break soil compaction better. And to get the proper trash mix into the soil to prevent erosion.

    Not a good idea.........

  • Might as well. The city has already paved over the prime farm land.

  • Sometimes that bear shits in my yard. And then the little asshole trashes my garden. I might buy a tag and shoot the son of a bitch this fall if he keeps it up.........

  • The problem with buying a Linux box is the cost. Discounting Chromebooks, (which have their own nasty issues with privacy), there are really no inexpensive ready to buy at Walmart priced, pre-installed Linux distro computers.

If you are willing to drop $1000+ for a pretty much mid grade computer, then you have a few choices. Otherwise, Linux distros are DIY. Which takes an effort most are unwilling to do - no matter how easy and how few clicks it takes to install.

Personally, I think all those cheap mini-PCs on Amazron should come pre-loaded with a distro. That would be the a great way for people to become familiar with Linux as a whole.

  • No, you don't need an account if you get Ondsel from their git https://github.com/Ondsel-Development/FreeCAD/releases

But, there is a free account that even gives you a bit of cloud storage if you want it. Or you don't even need to sign into it if you don't want. They do want to sell cloud storage for commercial use - Daddy's got to make a living you know. But, the software is still open source and free to keep and use as you see fit.

  • You only need an account if you want access their cloud storage and sharing management. You can get a tiny free account if you want. I signed up for the freebie since I sometimes work between 2 computers on the same project. But if you only use one computer, it's not going to get you anything extra.

You can add Ondsel Lens to your regular install simply by installing it through the add-on manager if you want.

  • Thank god I'm safe! And I will be dead and gone before it happens here. It's going to be decades before 5G is implemented where I live. Hell, 4G is spotty and unreliable even yet today. Even 3G was terrible.

  • Well, you can't take it on the chin if you don't have one I suppose.

  • You think LM being "too old" is a problem for newbies? I've been running some distro or other since RedHat 5. I it took me 6 weeks of waiting for Fedora to sort out most of the issues, (and I STILL have some minor ghosting issues and I ain't no gamer), and 4 tries to get Fedora 40 to successfully take the nVidia drivers for the GTX1650 chipset in my laptop.

You think a new wannbe convert is going to put up with that?
