  • I'll attempt to translate.

I suppose that if lemmy.world didn't want worldwide news (eg. post about Germany), then perhaps they should have chosen a different name.

They are trying to tell you that "EUgerman spam" you are complaining about is in fact not spam, but rather it is a normal part of a world-wide discussion.

  • Do you think Eugen has been personally moderating all Mastodon instances up until now?

He hasn't. Obviously the moderation system has nothing to do with what is being discussed here.

  • bluesky has more funding for self-promotion.

  • Back when I was on Twitter (a couple of years ago now), all links to Mastodon were explicitly marked as "unsafe", and posts containing such links were demoted. So it's apparently kind of normal for these social media companies to attempt to choke new competition as early as possible.

  • One advantage of Pixelfed is that it not a commercial company. So unlike Instagram, they do not have financial motivation to addict and exploit. So for people who are interested in seeing and sharing picture galleries, that seems like a good option to me.

(Personally I don't use Instagram or Pixelfed, or any other similar service.)

  • Pretty much the same for me. I've seen many posts and comments complaining about those kinds of things from .ml and .world; but close to zero of the actual behaviour that people complain about.

  • I'm reminded of Crosscode. Something like Hi. Bye. How. Wait. Sorry.

  • Thanks. I do remember this now. I don't remember it costing a lot of money, but I do remember people generally disagreeing with the idea of it - and then being amused by how it was to be implemented. And yes, to get around this filter I changed my DNS server from the ISP's default to instead use Google's. (This was far enough in the past that I wasn't yet anti-google!)

  • Old internet is where different people had different websites, and they'd link together with web-rings. People would explore and discover and share. The old internet was not dominated by mega-corps. There were no facebook accounts and no google accounts. It was just people sharing their ideas and interests - without trying to turn everything into a side-hustle, or data-harvest or anything like that.

  • I'm an Australian, and I don't remember the 'firewall' that you're talking about. Do you have a link or something to remind me?

  • Yeah, I agree that OP's attitude is unappealing. But it's not like OP is an official spokesperson or ambassador for Linux or anything like that. It's just a person giving their opinion. And in any large group of people there's always going to be some that you don't agree with. (and often they are the loudest most visible ones...)

  • I'm not so sure. I reckon he's using a Trump-style strategy of just constantly doing and saying outrageous rubbish in order to dominate people's attention. i.e. He just wants people to be paying attention to him, and thinking about him, and writing about him, regardless of whether it is positive or negative.

I believe he is doing this as a deliberate strategy, knowing that even if a lot of the reaction is negative, it still means that he has the attention of the world - and that people will listen to what he is saying.

  • I've found Mojeek to be a bit hit and miss; but one thing I really appreciate is that they actually do the indexing and searching themselves (whereas pretty much every other search site uses Bing or Google behind the scenes). So although Mojeek may not be ideal, they are at least making an effort to be independent.

  • I reckon polio is a good analogy. That illness doesn't seem so bad at first. Mild symptoms (or no symptoms at all), seems like you get better. It's much worse in a small number of cases - potentially causing paralysis and death. But a big issue is post-polio syndrome, which surfaces many years later in a large percentage of people.

fatigue is often the most disabling symptom; even slight exertion often produces disabling fatigue [...]

Covid is a bit like that. Most people who get it feel pretty rotten for a few days, and then its apparently over. But we've seen that for some people, covid causes permanent brain injuries resulting in chronic exhaustion and brain-fog. It's unclear precisely how common this this, but we know that repeated exposure increases the risk.

  • I know what you mean. Like, I understand that the vaccination is definitely worth taking. But feeling sick for a day after taking it saps the motivation to get it again. I want the vaccine, but it's so much harder to organise getting it again after having a negative experience like that. (Note, I've have a few covid vaccinations; and only once did I feel sick for a day because of it.)

  • I use to have a PayPal account. I used it to receive donations from some open-source projects that I was working on. And I passed most of the money on by re-donating it to other people who were also sharing high quality work that I liked. It was never very much money (like maybe a few hundred dollars in total over years); but I kind of enjoyed that.

But around 10 years ago, that PayPal account was blocked, because of who I'd sent money to. They didn't tell me specifically what the problem was, they just told me that it was 'suspicious' - and they (PayPal) demanded personal info from my to prove my identity before they would unlock the account. They wanted photos of drivers license and stuff like that.

Long story short, I eventually did get them to unblock the account (and I did not send them personal info); but that experience destroyed my confidence and trust in PayPal. So I drained the account, and haven't used them ever since. I very much don't like the idea that a company can just take my account (and money) hostage for totally arbitrary reasons and make demands based on that.

  • Surprisingly, this even applies to black holes (i.e. Hawking radiation).
