  • I think there is solid reasoning in most of what you said. But there is a key point that I don't agree with...

As long as the dems are anywhere before the line, even if they’re shockingly close, then people will have to pick them. So they move right up to that line because they won’t be punished for it. In turn, Republicans have the space to move further right now that the overton window has shifted.

You say "people will have to pick them"; but that's obviously not the case - otherwise they would have won.

One could choose to reverse your reasoning to say that the Republicans are free to become more and more progressive without being punished, because there is no other real option. ... Clearly that doesn't seem to be happening; but why not?

There's are a lot of different reasons why the window might shift left or right... but one fairly simple force is that it will tend to shift towards the party that is winning. Right now, the Republicans are winning, and so the Democrat tries to be just a bit more like them in the hope of capturing enough for the 'middle ground' to win. It is pretty natural to think that the middle is somewhere between the two parties, rather than further to the left. I think if the Dems were actually winning elections then they would not be sliding towards the other party. It would be the other way around.

  • Probably they do both. The paid drivers are a bit of a side-project to get government subsidies for 'job creation' and such.

  • Seems like the person wants to learn something, but with zero effort. (i.e. won't read the article; and certainly won't look for additional context or information.) So maybe it would be better to post the question into an AI chatbot. You can just ask whatever question, and get some plausible but possibly-bullshit answer; then feel good for satisfying your curiosity.

  • Coincidentally, I just read a mastodon post where someone did a basic experiment to see what kind of content TikTok is pushing.

I was curious what a TikTok user might see if they made a fresh account. I provided no preferred content categories, and did not interact with any video in any way except the skip them.

In my first fifteen minutes, I received:

9 manosphere “inspiration” videos The official accounts of Tucker Carlson and Vivek 2 clips from each Fox News, and tabloids New York Post and Metro 1 “America first” rando 1 Copaganda vid of “cool” new police robots Elon’s nazi salute without context or commentary

(they go on to list other things they saw after this.)

  • For sure. I've been looking for a solid OneNote replacement for a few years now. Inking is the only major barrier.

I really like OneNote, and I've been using it for more than 10 years. But in recent years, my dislike for Microsoft has grown to the point where I feel I need to stop using all their products.

Right now I'm using xournal++ a lot. It has really excellent drawing functionality; but zero organisational functions. (I'm organising my xournal notes using just file names and folder structure.)

What I really want is integrated xournal support with Obsidian, or Joplin. In Joplin, I've tried inserting a pdf into my notes, and telling Joplin to open the pdf by launching xournal++. That sort of works; but the viewing of the pdf in Joplin shows a window-within-a-window; and the creating of new notes is fiddly; so I decided it wasn't quite good enough.

  • I actually agree with this comic, feminism has been hijacked by career sociopaths who treat misandry as a guiding principal, but it’s sexist to talk about that.

I'm sure that is not what the comic is trying to say. From what you've said, you actually disagree with the message of the comic.

  • I guess if you already own a Kindle then you might be interested in jailbreaking it. But for someone choosing an ereader it seems that Kobo is just a better choice. Isn't it? Like, why pay to put yourself in a jailed system in the first place?

  • It seems to me that Bernie is doing his best to create and energize a movement of working-class people in support of a better world. It isn't trying to hijack an existing movement; because no cohesive movement currently exists. The lack of cohesion is exactly what Bernie is trying to address.

  • One must be careful with this kind of reasoning, because often the time is not a cost - but actually a valuable part of the experience in its own right. Walking to the corner store is slower than driving - but can be a worthwhile experience for its own sake - as it give a bit of time for quiet reflection, and light exercise, and fresh air. Depending on your tastes, a similar thing could be said about doing some maintenance work on your bike vs paying someone to do it for you.

Getting too bogged down in time vs money can potentially lead to miscalculations and stress. Is it better to give someone a quick blowjob for a bit of extra cash so that you can pay someone to vacuum your house? Perhaps the calculation is not really one-dimensional.

For me, simply spending less time thinking about money is worth quite a bit of 'wasted' money & time; because I value the headspace that would otherwise be consumed by that!

  • For what it's worth, I was using linux for a full 2 years before I worked out whether or not I had wayland. -- Because it just doesn't matter for normal everyday use. And I've never even heard of 'gamescope'.

The technobabble that you're concerned about is only relevant to people who are interested in looking into the details of how things work. Its a bit like talking about the Windows registry, or the many settings you can change with 'group policy', or NTFS, or comparing versions directX. For most people, that stuff just doesn't matter - even if it is a core part of how the system works.

  • Fair enough. Thanks for the info.

  • The winapps link in my post says it is a hard-fork of the one you linked to (and my one has updates as recent as yesterday). So it isn't abandoned.

  • Is there a reason why you've suggested qeumu in particular for the VM? (winapps suggests two different VM options)

I've never heard of OnlyOffice before. The wikipedia page seems to imply that they are web-apps; and the OnlyOffice website talks about pricing for businesses and personal severs or something, listing team collaboration features. So I'm not yet entirely sure exactly what OnlyOffice is - but I suspect it isn't really what I'm looking for.

  • Maybe so, but then there's still Excel and OneNote.

Regarding OneNote in particular, I'm not using that for any collaborative work; but I do have extensive notes and useful past work there. I reckon OneNote is pretty good - but I regret using it now because of the lock-in effect. And there doesn't seem to be any Linux analogue at all. (What I need is xournal++ integrated into Joplin. I sometimes fantasize about trying to hack that together myself; but that's just a dream really.)

  • I haven't bothered to try it myself, but my internet sleuthing tells me that the latest versions don't work.

  • I'd be happy enough to move to Libre Office exclusively; except that I need to be able to collaborate with others who are using MS Office - and that's a battle I don't really want to fight right now.

  • I don't know how many users reddit has, but it is a lot more than lemmy. Lemmy is quite small in terms of number of users.

But I think focusing on relative numbers of users is a mistake. Forty thousand people is still a lot of people. And we can see that it is enough people to create a vibrant community with a steady stream of good content and conversations. So the fact that it is small compared to other social media is not really relevant, in my opinion. Having a thousand times more users doesn't make things a thousand times better - that's for sure.

(That said, I do think its worth noting if the number of users is going up or down... because if there was a significant downward trend, that would be a bad sign.)

  • In my experience winapps doesn’t work well enough to use for work. I had almost constant issues with it.

That's a disappointing to hear - but it's exactly the experience I hoped to avoid myself by asking about it. So thank you!

Your setup for getting nice *nix stuff on Windows sounds good, but for me it isn't so much that I want to use *nix stuff but rather that I want to avoid Windows stuff. For example, today I got a popup notification from Microsoft suggesting that I should install an xbox app. ... I said 'no', and quickly disabled those kinds of suggestions. Easy - except that I've disabled various 'suggestions' in Windows countless times. Its a constant chore keeping up with new anti-features constantly being added. So that's really what I'm trying to avoid.
