  • Key phrase being "short term" - nobody seems to build with a 20+ year plan to improve the city in America, whereas in European cities every time I visit one I haven't been to in a decade, I usually notice I'm reaping the benefits of major infrastructure improvements which take decades to plan and build. Short term, selfish (what will get me elected again, or what will pay me the biggest bonus) thinking, and corruption, is what keeps American cities shitty

  • I bought a 2 bedroom single family home in South Carolina last year for $86k with only $11k down, 7 minute drive from the city center of the capital city (Columbia). Mortgage is $480/mo. Cheap houses absolutely still exist if you're willing to live in areas where "nobody wants to live"

  • Kinda yeah, but I was still able to buy it with only £10k down, my mortgage is only £350/month, and I've repainted the place to suit my taste and cut out a wall to make space for a washing machine (I put a dishwasher in the kitchen instead). Not saying it's for everyone, but it worked for me 🤷

  • There are still cheap places to live all over England and Scotland - I bought a 1 bedroom flat with small garden for £90k in Peterborough (a smaller city about an hour north of London) 3 years ago, and the garden has enough space for a few raised beds with vegetables in them

  • I agree and that rise saddens me, but in Europe, I still generally have confidence that the majority of countries' populations respect general decency, human rights and lack of corruption enough to keep the hate and greed mostly at bay. In the US, it's now long past hope - the corruption runs so deep, so broadly that it's taken over, and that means the country is doomed to be somewhere I never wanna live.

  • There isn't even "justice" for cis white men though - justice in the USA barely even exists any more. The greed and corruption runs so deep that the supreme court are all bribed or heavily biased, so I have no confidence whatsoever in the judicial system.

    I'm a cis white man, and I'm working to get myself the hell out of this utterly fucked country as soon as I can because everybody in power is blatantly corrupt and there are no functional checks and balances any more.
