  • They also already rolled back Biden admin's order for AI protections. So they don't even have the benefit of those. There's supposedly a Trump admin AI order now in place but it doesn't have the same scope at all. So Altman and pals may just be SOL. There's no regulatory body to tell except the courts and China literally doesn't care about those.

  • It would be awesome if they did face consequences so I didn't have to keep my credit locked while I go through the process of getting a new SSN. This is getting ridiculous. They notified me by mail like a week ago that my data is in this breach too. This really needs to stop happening.

  • Sometimes parents look back on things and realize that it's too little too late. My mother doesn't like the relationship I have with her (I'm not zero contact but I only call when I'm feeling up to it and that can take months). I was physically abused as a kid on top of having ADHD (then ADD), and I was diagnosed but never medicated.

My youngest brother has Autism and my parents went above and beyond to get him everything he needed by my sister and I (both with ADHD) basically got nothing.

It's exhausting to think about what ifs. At this point in this time I have received an apology (though not for the things I remember, and more for the things she regrets which do not necessarily align). I think a lot of her regret is based on our relationship now and how she wishes it could be.

But I look at it like this. I'm just living in the world, doing my best to survive and take care of myself. That's something I have been doing since I was a child. I continue to do that because I don't know any other way. I do not have the energy to give to her for her regret. I acknowledge it. I accept the apology. But I gave up being angry about it. I just do not have the energy for it.

We can't change how we grew up. It's better to acknowledge the sentiment and move on. At least, I think so. Try not to tie up too much of yourself in what could have been. Get to know and accept the you that is in the here and now. You'll make your own way. You got this far.

  • People don't want to wake up. They see horrors every day and look no further than the surface of them. They are horrified by things they do not even begin to understand. But they'll push a narrative if you put it in front of them and they feel reasonably selfrighteous about it.

That's why nobody is out there actively eating the rich and becoming the Luigi they want to see in the world.

  • The secret is to get filthy rich, I guess. Money ≠ Repercussions.

  • Back during the pandemic, Trump had the postal service send a letter to every single mailbox in America about the COVID relief money, to make sure everyone knew he was "responsible". It'll be like that. But email.

  • This was a comment about Apple and Google specifically, not about their app stores or the apps on them created by non-apple/non-google developers. There's a clear difference.

  • Lol. I Iove that people think apple isn't collecting just as much of their data as Google. It's a stupid assumption and it's not true but here we are.

  • This will hit a dead end as soon as Trump sends classified intelligence in an "All Hands" email.

  • What does your mom say?

  • I honestly thought I was safe, that the GOP's threats were bluster, that they could act on them but they'd fail, because the American people had spoken and weren't going to buy that the "threat was already in their locker room."<<

So many people keep thinking this. It's every marginalized group. In every single one of them there are people who get complacent and assume they are safe. And then for reasons I don't understand, they vote against their own best interest or don't vote at all. Because some singular issues matters more to them than the issues that are actively hurting their fellow men and women.

I don't mean to blame you when I say this. I mean to explain that it's not you. I have felt this way. I felt like this when Trump got elected back in 2016. I didn't understand how people could vote for him. I talked to several people who were marginalized like me who didn't seem to think he was a threat. Who thought he might even be good for the country.

Trump is an inventive liar, and his charisma appeals to a certain subset of the population who are single issue voters. The message that "only I can help" appeals to some people because it's what people who are overwhelmed want to hear. Because they don't want to have to figure things out. They are already overstressed and they want to pass off responsibility to others.

When you add in the war on education for the last 80 or more years, you can start to recognize that a lot of people just don't have critical thinking skills or they're in such a state of overwhelmed worry that they can't use them.

It's not just one thing. And the vast majority probably didn't intend to "betray" anyone. The system is designed to keep the population desperate so that they don't organize against it.

And people like to assume they're immune from propaganda. They aren't. It's insidious. It's the type of thing you have to actively be on guard for.

As for "friends or family", this may seem harsh, but if they would hurt you in this way they were never your people. Let them go. Build meaningful relationships with other people who you can count on for love and support.

Things are hard and they're going to get harder. We gotta work to get things changed. That's all we can do. The fight is never over.

  • Yes. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/clyeer3qp12o

It said that unless the government immediately stepped in to assure the video app it would not be punished for violating the looming ban, it would be "forced to go dark on January 19".<<

  • Some Tik Tok creators are complaining on the platform that they are being censored, specifically in regards to talking poorly about the Trump administration.

As much as some people harp on Tik Tok being a bastion of non-censorship, it has been proven repeatedly that this is not actually true. They just pick and choose carefully what to censor and when. Most platforms do that. It's not surprising. It also wouldn't be surprising for them to not promote or prioritize content with their algorithm that could be seen by the current POTUS as inflammatory because they are attempting to gain favor with him at the moment in exchange for potential political favors in regards to the platform in the future.

    https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2019/sep/25/revealed-how-tiktok-censors-videos-that-do-not-please-beijing

  • The law stipulates that the POTUS is the person who determines that a platform or app is in violation. Once that happens, an investigation is launched through the AG's office and applicable agencies. After that the AG's office makes a determination about whether or not the app/platform is in violation of the law. Once that happens, the platform or app can appeal. But if they lose that appeal then they have a limited time to divest to another entity before their platform is banned and the POTUS can pause not revoke this process for a period of time (to give the app time to divest as is required). So basically Trump now has given Tik Tok a stay of execution so to speak but that doesn't mean they won't be forced to shut down or divest.

This was a direct politically planned and intended effect of this push so close to the inauguration, so far as I can tell. It's politicians doing political stuff.

Right now he looks like the savior (and that's intentional, both Tik Tok and Trump get something out of that). But in the long term I don't know that most Tik Tok users are going to remember that Trump bought the app back and to actually remove the law requires an act of Congress. That will take more time than the limited amount that Trump can essentially delay the removal of the app from app stores and American servers.

I honestly think this was a fuck you to Trump from Biden because essentially Biden's political career is over. Trump is going to do a lot of damage over the next 4 years and do as much as he can to undo any of the progress that has been made. It's kind of a petty move on Biden's part, but Trump started this colossal movement against Tik Tok in the first place.

  • To try to make him look bad, is my theory.
