  • You can buy them from Best Buy? Scamazon? Walmart?

  • Voice/video usually supported by a TURN server. If you check out the link in the OP you can see this app supports it.

  • You should check out this thing called the Threadiverse.

  • My commentary was not specifically on Tesla but on EV trucks in general.

In practice, no way will anything made by a grifter last the demands of real world trucking

They sell a million cars a year. Whatever you think of them, they're good at selling vehicles.

Industrial trucks that use gravity to generate electrical power already rule mining and logging.

    Huh?

Have you seen the prices of public charging?

    Only every day.

in UK, it's more expensive than petrol.

only when made by a real truck company, and likely with cheaper sodium batteries that work in very cold weather.

You don't seem to realize that there's a whole world and market that exists outside of wherever you live in the UK.

  • Already did, it's called Commet.

  • Matrix is actually already fleshed out very well

    LOOOOOLOLOLOLOL

it honest has at this point 12 years of development behind it

That's really not something to be proud of.

  • I managed to spin it up yesterday and it seemed to work pretty well during my brief testing.

Can we see? As usual the dev tells us virtually nothing about it.

  • I work on these diesel trucks. Whatever they're charging, it's worth it. Since the gov demanded new emissions regulations in ~2008 it has become prohibitively more expensive to maintain these vehicles. Probably 70% of the work that I do has to do with the emissions equipment. You can have a perfectly functioning vehicle but if the emissions system has a problem, or even thinks it has a problem, which it often does, it will derate the vehicle and it has to be grounded, towed away and repaired.

Now imagine you cut your fuel expenses in half (probably more in mountainous regions) and your maintenance and downtime budget by ~70%? Yeah that's very attractive.

There's also a safety aspect. If you live in mountainous regions you'll see runaway vehicle ramps. Just short uphill roads filled with gravel and other substances meant to slow, like they have on the side of race tracks. That's because the brakes can actually overheat on long descents and stop working, which is obviously a huge and terrifying problem. EVs not only solve that problem with Regen but also turn all that heat back into energy.

  • If your child steals a car, are you allowed to say "I can't watch my kids all time time" and get off consequence free? Of course not. Do I think it is realistic for parents to keep an eye on their kid 100% of the time, of course not.

I don't understand how you reconcile these 2 statements. They can't watch their kids 100% but also if the kid does something illegal, it's their responsibility? You can raise your kids to do whatever you want but they often do not listen.

If they aren't ready for unsupervised access to the internet, then you shouldn't allow it.

Good luck telling your kids they can't get on the internet. Remember you can't watch them all day.

Point is, if the parents are irresponsible, then who does it hurt? The parents? No. It hurts the children, and it hurts the rest of society.

Your same argument can be used to abolish any sort of legal protections for children like gambling, driving, smoking, drinking, tattoos, etc. Everything should be the parents' responsibility, right?

  • I mean I definitely do NOT use WhatsApp but it doesn't seem like the relevant topic here so let's just replace it with "chat message", in which case no, I couldn't disagree more.

Email (especially email from the likes of MS and Google) is a fucking black hole. I get about a dozen spam emails/day, and the search function doesn't work for shit. The "All mail" box is absolutely not all mail, and the search function doesn't even search it by default. So anything I need to reference later takes me 15 fucking minutes to find, if I even find it at all. On a messenger I just go into the relevant chat and do a search and it works perfectly or just check the "files/media" section.

Emails are also just absolutely chock full of irrelevant information and broken formatting that sometimes I can't actually even find the message content itself. Really annoying "signatures".

    It's completely insecure by default.

People fail to "reply all" constantly, so relevant people are omitted from the conversation. Or worse, someone DOES reply all when they shouldn't, which causes a shitstorm of its own flavor.

You cannot remove yourself or anyone else from a conversation chain.

Every time you start a new convo, you start a new chain.

First, it’s asynchronous. We don’t live in the 1990s any more, so email doesn’t beep for attention

WTF are you talking about? Of course it does. Unless you modify the permissions. Which you can also do with chat. Except with chat you have MUCH MORE granularity about which specific chats make noises and when. It's up to YOU to manage that, not anyone else.

Third, my computer has a keyboard and my phone doesn’t. Yes, I could install WhatsApp on a personal computer, but even if WhatsApp was well reviewed on Windows (it isn’t), I wouldn’t want to.

LOL just blaming others for your unwillingness to improve your life now.

Fourth, it’s easy to organise email visually. When I check my email

    You're fucking high.

Fifth, it’s much easier to customise the way email works — you can schedule future messages and set up filters, auto-replies and templates with chunks of text you regularly need to use. You can turn emails into calendar appointments with a click or two. Some instant-messaging apps offer some of this functionality, but all of it is commonplace on email, most of it for decades.

I mean you can replace email here with something like Nextcloud Talk, MS Teams or Google Chat to get that integration. But yeah, probably never getting that with WhatsApp.

many instant-messaging platforms have an owner with market power and an ever-present temptation to degrade the user experience in pursuit of profit.

Okay, you got me on this one, no one does that for email... 😐

If you don’t like WhatsApp and would rather use Signal, you need to persuade your friends to embrace the new platform. In contrast, nobody owns email: it’s an open standard

Yeah this is probably the one positive for email. But there are other decentralized platforms that don't come with any of the compromises. But it's also worth noting that companies like Google and MS own like 70% of emails or something.

the person who sent it did so because they lost control of their email. Their inbox is overflowing; the searchable, fileable history of communications is no longer an asset but a guilty burden; they don’t trust themselves to reliably deal with an email, and so they don’t trust me either.

    LOL pot meet kettle?

  • openchargemaps

  • Uhhh I mean kinda? SimpleX is just a network and the servers are just relays. So, is TOR "decentralized"? It's definitely not centralized.

  • The way you said it sounded like you were advocating for parents to watch their kids every second of every day, and if they don't then whatever happens is their fault.

  • That is what I said, yes.

  • It's not, but that doesn't make your argument any more sensible.

  • Hear me out: parents are irresponsible, and also can't watch their kids 24/7

  • Sorry I used the improper pronouns while assuaging your concerns and answering your query. I promise it won't happen again.

  • I think banning a topic because you don't like it is not fair for everyone else

It's not just them. A lot of us don't like it. The rules don't exist to appease everyone but to make a "good" community, whatever that means in the eyes of the moderators. So it's a valid suggestion.

It is already used and part in many sections in our life

    No it's absolutely not.

I mean would you rather like it being silently used

They can use it and talk about it somewhere else.

I don't understand why you want to ban it for everyone.

Because it's fucking everywhere and it's fucking infuriating and it's fucking dogshit. Corporations are stealing from creators and publishers, driving up costs of electricity, water, and electronic hardware across the board, unleashing DDoS attacks on the entire internet, creating an economic bubble the size of which the world has never seen, and inevitably going to lead to the destruction of the global economy, all in the pursuit of what? Spreading disinformation and sexual abuse? The damage AI is unleashing on the world cannot be overstated...

The absolute least we can do is stop perpetuating it on our little space on the internet.

  • Have you not also noticed a dramatic increase in instability of platforms like Windows, AWS and Cloudflare?
