For all your owl related needs!

  • I have nothing bad to say about state wildlife employees, but their mission is not necessarily always the same as that of a rehab clinic.

They play a role in certifying and regulating what we do at a rehab, but from my understanding they are there to see nature take its course while not having negative impacts to the citizens of the state. Rehabbers are here to save every animal possible.

This causes some people to find us anywhere from harmless to annoying to seeing us as interfering with nature. It's personal and political like any other matter once you dig down enough. But a rehab's job is to save every animal life that we legally can, and I think that difference is significant in certain scenarios.

Maybe the best comparison I can give is how a city pound or SPCA will help rehome some animals vs a no-kill cat or dog specific rescue that will try to save every animal they take. They're not bad, they're still helping, but they have a different mission.

  • It's crazy how much they puff up!

Our baby GHO last year was a grump and would do this every time I came to feed it. It felt like if I laid down next to it like this we'd be the same volume.

  • I'm sad they've dropped all the old owl branding and cool packaging.

  • Sometimes it amazes me we're able to learn a single language with all the rules and exceptions we all have! 😄

  • Such a cute trill!

I've wanted to do a blind owl call contest somewhat like OotY, but I don't think Lemmy has a great way to support something like that.

  • I love when non-English people can teach me some of these things! I try to be inclusive of the whole world of owls, but tracking things down blindly is so difficult the further from English language gets.

Most times I just try to look up how people say "owl" and try to search that. For Czech, I get sova, but when I looked up a pronunciation for Výr velký I finally stumbled on a list of what you actually call different owls, and almost none include sova anywhere in the name, so it tells me I've been chasing a dead end this whole time!

Now, with this new knowledge, I can better try and find Czech sources for wild owl photos, articles, and rescues!

  • Same! There are some others around the world, like the boobooks and Morepork/Ruru, but out of all people, the Germans got an owl name down to 3 letters! 😆

  • "Excuse me, I found this, but it doesn't have a sticker... Will you take $15?"

I always worry when they just toss the animals back into nature instead of calling a rehabber first. Without knowing how long it's been stuck inside, they don't know if it's dehydrated or injured, so it might not be able to properly hunt or protect itself.

It's an adult, and a person shouldn't ever really be able to lay hands on a healthy wild owl.

If you ever find an animal, a call to your local rehab can tell you what to do to ensure the best chance of the animal's safety and success.

  • I love it 😄

At least pellets shooting out are less messy than pea soup!

  • None of them ever helped get anyone elected Owl of the Year though!

  • Yeah, I expected most entries to be from the US. The International Owl Center isn't (currently) a very big place. Still, exciting to see kids everywhere put so much effort into it and enjoying owls.

  • It made me wonder if Thailand is really big into owls. It did seem disproportionate.

I do believe one is a fish owl, which I enjoyed.

  • You are quite correct, I should have said the book highlighted those issues, not that it was about them. As Sinclair said, "I aimed at the public's heart, and by accident I hit it in the stomach."

While socialism never took off to the extent Sinclair hoped, we did get the Pure Food and Drug Act and Meat Inspection Act, though those are feeling more like suggestions rather than standards with things like these policy changes and how cleanliness and food safety were treated through the COVID epidemic.

  • I greatly enjoy the colors and patterns in this one.

  • The colors make me think of being a kid in the 80s/early 90s!

  • I think this one is really good for the age group! I would have picked this as the 0-5 First Prize, but I didn't read all the rules and judging criteria, so maybe they got dinged for something.

  • I was really surprised by some of these!

Anyone over 5 definitely outclasses me.

  • Lol, poor kid isn't exactly from Snowy Owl territory! We can cut them a little slack. 😄

It did make me Google if Hong Kong gets any snow out of curiosity, and the answer is....sorta.

    Hong Kong Observatory:

Hong Kong's climate is sub-tropical, tending towards temperate for nearly half the year. During the winter season, it is not uncommon for temperatures to drop below 10oC in the urban areas, and the lowest temperature ever recorded at the Observatory was 0oC on 18 January 1893.

With intense winter monsoon bringing very cold air mass from the north, sub-zero temperatures could sometimes occur on high ground and in the New Territories, where there were reports of frost, ice, rime or even slight snow. From 1967 to 1975, there were four days with slight snow reported in Hong Kong (see table). Although frost and ice still occasionally occurred in winter, there was no more report of snow ever since.

    The more you know! ☃️
