c/Superbowl

For all your owl related needs!

  • I watched the Superbowl on a Sky Sports stream from the UK. No ads, they just cut to talking to people on the field.

  • Poor owl couple! 😦

So many animals get stuck/burned/killed from uncapped chimneys. I'm glad these 2 could get through the flue and get found before long.

The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) said tawny owls were the most common owls in the UK, but they had declined by more than 40% between 1995 and 2023.

"Because they only come out at night, they're tricky to study and scientists don't yet know the reasons for their decline, but habitat loss and a lack of prey might be part of the problem," an RSPB spokesperson said.

We are pretty much the only cause for owl decline. We eliminate their homes, we poison their food, we hit them with cars, we shoot them, we let cats get at them, we leave dangerous obstacles for them to hit and get ensnared with, and so on. 😠 /end rant

  • Thank you! I didn't notice the drop down menu earlier.

  • Yup, owls will add some pine needles or down or various odds and ends, but none that I'm aware of build any structure themselves.

Great Horns love eagle nests and will fight over them at times. Their seasons don't overlap, so they can often trade off use of the nest, but they still harass each other if they happen to cross paths.

  • And they aren't just in Australia. This one is... but the wiki for tick paralysis says they're kinds in Asia and the Americas also that are similar.

  • I feel like I've been a tick magnet all my life. I'd come out of the woods with other people and be the only one with them. I get so paranoid about those little buggers. It's kept me out of the woods and tall grass more than I'd like. 🥺

  • To me, they looked bigger on the wiki, so I dunno if this one is just small or if it's waaaay in there. That's the only unusual thing I spotted, so I blew that pic up and circled it, but I'm pretty sure that's it, as it's the only eye pic they shared.

    Yick!

  • For more about the area:

    Chernobyl Exclusion Zone Wikipedia

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic and Russian invasion there were many visitors to the Exclusion Zone annually, and daily tours from Kyiv. In addition, multiple-day excursions can be easily arranged with Ukrainian tour operators. Most overnight tourists stay in a hotel within the town of Chernobyl, which is located within the Exclusion Zone. According to an exclusion area tour guide, as of 2017, there are approximately 50 licensed exclusion area tour guides in total, working for approximately nine companies. Visitors must present their passports when entering the Exclusion Zone and are screened for radiation when exiting, both at the 10 km checkpoint and at the 30 km checkpoint.

Safety rules during visiting the exclusion zone:

    • Moving around the territory outside the regulated route is dangerous since there are radioactive spots and wild animals.
    • Smoking is the main reason for fires in the exclusion zone.
    • Abandoned property on the territory of the exclusion zone can emit radiation, therefore you should not touch them or take them with you.
    • It is prohibited to sit or put your stuff on the ground, stay overnight in tents or have picnics. The ground in the exclusion zone is affected by radioactive contamination to the utmost.
    • Do not eat vegetables, fruits or mushrooms that grow in the exclusion zone. The local harvest can be radioactive.
    • It is prohibited to eat or drink in the open air. Radionuclides together with dust can accumulate on your food and get inside your body.
    • Visitors of the exclusion zone and the Chornobyl Reserve cannot be in a state of alcoholic intoxication, since it is necessary to assess the situation properly and strictly follow the instructions of the attendant, wear the clothes and shoes that cover the body as much as possible.

  • Hah, I overthink everything 🤯

  • Are you able to put that rad level into context?

  • Scientists, not ones to waste anything, have found tons of things to study in the huge contaminated area, so danger zones are very well documented as they study the residual contamination and its effects.

There were tours anyone could take up until the war in Ukraine. One tour website stated there were 8 safe routes to explore with a licensed guide. The radiation exposure of the tour area for the permitted duration was said to be the same as a long flight. The main guidelines said don't touch or eat anything and to preferably wear disposable clothing and footwear to avoid prolonged contact from anything potentially carried out with you.

  • Uh oh

  • I think I look at myself in the mirror like this every morning. 😉

  • I thought I'd be bored with owls well before 3000 posts, but I'm still learning ever more about them. There is so much to our world that we could never have the time to truly understand. I'm glad we all get to learn about some of these things here together.

  • No shade at the other answers, but I feel this is the only answer to the actual question concerning "overpriced" items. Even OP's example, they are getting something for their extra expense: convenience. The others are things that people are buying even though there are less expensive alternatives available, but I don't think anyone would say they aren't at least getting a perceived value for the extra cost.

On the other hand, we have historic RAM prices to get an idea of true value, and it is only speculation that is driving up the cost. The RAM hasn't gotten any better, it's not even new, it cost you more than it should, but you need it, so you have to suck it up and pay a premium while getting nothing extra in return.
