  • Sometimes history shows oligarchs breaking stuff to make more money for themselves: trade patterns, movement of people, social safety nets, previous methods of doing business.

    I think we all got so used to the modern times that it’s hard to image this still happening, but on a bigger scale.

    Or, it could be mostly empty threats now, designed to manipulate the markets. We saw Trump scares during his last term in office, particularly near the end, that would deliberately scare enough people to make bank in stocks and bonds. Scaring a nation is very profitable.

    Probably both types of things.

  • I see what you did wrong there, you assume we have a working, strong, beautiful , lively and critical, independent ( one of these adjectives) media whose owners have a moral compulsion to help.

    Where in fact all we got going for truth is a handful of perpetually near broke, small and weak outlets who are run on coffee fumes and dreams, not necessarily in that order

  • If Trump really does remove large parts of government and raises the tariffs that way, things are going to get interesting in the Houston area. A

    I’m wondering if the people behind him really do want to do all this or if he is full of hot air. I doubt, for all his bluster he that independent. If they want to do this, then it must be a deliberate decision to paralyze the country for some reason. Why, I have no clue.

  • I’m a little out of the loop, but I think the main barriers to peace here are the meddling of the foreign powers, all of them have their own agenda which is often in conflict themselves even if some are allies elsewhere.

    I think it would have been negotiated out of pure exhaustion years ago otherwise

  • Listening to my small town chatter, where there are many mega enthusiasts, I can promise there there is no love for Musk. I think this guy is out of touch or my community is special.

    And that strikes a nerve about how my area was double abandoned by the Democratic Party. Not only are they unwilling to talk about cheating by Republicans in elections here, but the party does understand or wish to understand the people.

    Is it any wonder many here are seduced by lies? They are not dumb, just desperate.
