  • I don't think I've seen a "premium" phone with a plastic back in a LONG time

Well, they’re definitely less these days but the Xiaomi 15 Ultra, Motorola Razr 60, OnePlus 13, Motorola Edge 50 and Pixel 9a are all premium or even flagship phones (between 500€ and over 1000€) that have plastic backs.

There's a wide range of plastics, it gets a bad rap

And glass also gets a bad rep. The time where your iPhone 4S back shatters because you dropped it from 30cm is no more, at least in premium phones. Sure, it can break, while plastics usually won’t, but they’re so much less likely to break from dropping, these days. Gorilla Glass and Apples Ceramic Shield do surprisingly well even with heavier abuse.

But yes, I wouldn’t mind some quality plastic options used on more premium phones. But it’s not quite as bad as you make it out to be.

  • Well, what’s the alternative? Metal won’t work because wireless charging is expected for most phones. Leaves glass and plastic, which are both found on premium phones. Glass more so because it feels and looks nicer than plastic and doesn’t scratch as easily, but you can still get premium phones with plastic backs.

  • Or LEPRecon, the fairy police reconnaissance force from the Artemis Fowl series of books.

  • I love this in principle but I can’t use it myself. I‘m a very fast reader by default, basically already doing what the highlighting tries to make you do, without it needing to be there. The highlighting disrupts that for me. I end up stopping at every word and partially jumping back and forth. I do show this to people on occasion that aren’t as lucky as me with their reading speed and most said it helped them. Not all though.

  • I don’t think the perspective matters that much because that black rim at the back is at roughly the same depth as the picture so you only have to compare it to that. Only your red lines matter and they prove, that there’s a bit of space to the right while there isn’t to the left.

  • Horizontally. The picture is not perfectly centred above the stove. Needs to be moved a little bit to the right.

  • Forget them hanging a picture above their stove. What’s worse is that they didn’t even centre it.

  • Thanks! So about what I thought I knew. Shocker, that newer formats have better compression yet worse support. Who‘d have thunk?

  • Any thoughts on AAC compared to mp3 and Opus?

  • The cops will still take you with them to the station when you don’t have an ID to show if they ask for it. You are by law required to identify yourself with a physical ID.

So yes, while it’s not illegal to not carry your ID on you, it’s still to your own detriment if you cannot produce it.

  • In Germany it‘s similar. You are required to have an ID with you. It’s not strictly illegal though to not have it on you but if you happen to have business with police (be it an accident, random traffic stop or you having part in illegal activities), when you don’t have it on you, they can make you come to the police station with them to confirm your identity, even if they wouldn’t otherwise.

  • And a lot of those safe guards (like the System Integrity Protection) can be turned off, if that’s what you like. The terminal together with the homebrew package manager make macOS a really good place to be, if you can’t get rid of some software that won’t run on Linux (like the Adobe suite).

  • It could. It might not. But it’s intel so the probability they’ve actually locked it down is higher than with AMD. But hardware is often more capable than what the specs say. That’s why overclocking is a thing or, in the past, you could unlock an extra core on some processors. It’s just never a guarantee and can vary from part to part, even if it’s the same model.

  • Well, depends on the price point but below 500-600€, yea, Apple has nothing to offer. At or above that price point, there obviously are counterparts to Apple devices and vice versa.

  • The glass is clearly half full, if you started with an empty glass and half empty, if you started with a full one.

  • Yea, I wouldn’t personally get a Samsung, even if I was in the market for a cheap Android…

  • I was just backing you up with an approximate exchange rate.

  • Touché. While Mesa is rock solid, using AMD cards for compute is indeed a fool‘s errand.

  • I’m well aware of apple’s strategy and I myself am typing this on an iPhone 13 mini I bought refurbished.

However, for public perception of a brand as being expensive, used/refurbished models don’t really count. The cheapest phone Apple currently sells new (16e) is about 600€; 700€ directly from Apple. That’s not a cheap phone.Samsung, as one of the most expensive android brands, still sells a variety of phones well below that, as low as 80€ for a brand new phone.

That obviously skews the perception towards Samsung being more affordable than Apple. Which they are. I cannot possibly get a new iPhone at 80€ or even a decent refurbished one.

But of course that still doesn’t mean iPhones are overpriced. You usually get what you pay for and similar devices by other manufacturers are usually just as expensive.
