Well, clearly you are, or you wouldn't suggest that most people should stay on (what I think we both agree to be) an inferiror platform that affords them fewer freedoms.
If you're worried that somehow that would bring unwanted attention or a bad crowd, you can always sequester yourself in a more niche server. That's the whole point of this federated system to begin with - giving us more control of our digital presence.
A lot of people would rather sit around and tear down the progress being made around them for being imperfect, than pitch in to help change things for the better.
Why release this? Because they're building their own ecosystem. They're trying to build an alternative to the big players, which means they need to have an alternative to all their major products. Maps and YouTube are probably off the table for now, just because of the sheer scale needed for those, but something like this is achievable.
Is Aegis better? Maybe, but that's not really the point, it's part of a family of apps.
