  • I'm just here to point out that the fact you genuinely care about your carbon footprint probably puts you ahead of 80% of the population, and the fact that it has materially affected your device choices probably puts you ahead of 80% of the remainder.

    There's definitely a unique satisfaction that comes from filling tech needs with hardware that already exists, and which does a great job at it too.

    That goes across hobbies and mediums too. I just finished a big outdoor carpentry project where I was able to find perfect long-term uses for pieces of wood from The Initial Build in the construction of The New Hotness.

    The frumpy dumpy path so many in my demo seem to assume is their destiny can fuck alllll the way off. We need people to share their interests and be flamboyant if that's what's in their heart!

    God forbid we allow a spark of joy in our hearts to reach out and improve the existence of another human, right?     But more importantly, I responded to your broad generalized statement with one of my own. I don't know why you think a single counter example (even a good one and not just somebody being wrong) is going to shatter my statement as if it's a scientific theory.

    The biggest Democrat "support" I generally see here, and which I have contributed to myself, is the suggestion that it may be a good idea to vote for a severely flawed Democrat in order to avoid everything we're seeing right now and have waiting for us in the next 3+ years.

    I decided to go look up the rules in order to contribute something more useful to this discussion, and it turns out that the mere presence of offspring does not disqualify one from the award!

    Given their reasoning, I think Kirk would qualify. And given that his whole brand was about spreading stupid dangerous ideas to everybody's kids including his own, and then he died in a spectacularly ironic and public way, I think he should actually win one!

  • This isn't a movie plot we're talking about here, nor is it some small far-away regional conflict that could never affect you.

    I'm in the US but even if I was on the opposite side of the globe in a decent and closely allied country like Australia or NZ, I think I'd still be worried about these psychos being in control of the 800 pound gorilla.

  • Nope I don't have experience installing older distros. I used some Unix systems in the late 90s (Sun Solaris) and really liked them even though I wasn't yet the Linux/FOSS enthusiast I am now.

    Your comment does not surprise me at all, though. For any rough edges Linux has had over the years, at least the motivations of the developers creating it have been in the right place all along. That is, making software for themselves and users, as opposed to the innumerable forces of enshittification within tech giants like Microsoft.

    I don't do anything with yarn, but will sometimes use fabric to make puppets and other toys with my kid.

    Even buying the cheapest fabric from the lowest priced outlets (cheaper than even the random alphabet soup brands on amazon) in bulk, it adds up so fast when you're actually creating things!
