  • The US immigration "policy" is just as stupid as it is inhumane. At this point it's easier to imagine it being orchestrated by rivals that think long term, rather than being just from the ever-present conservative hate and ignorance.

Our economy is built with an infinite growth mindset, moreso than most. ALL developed nations are seeing population growth slow down and even reverse -- that's just what happens when populations get educated and wealthy.

So what are we doing? Violently kicking out tons of lower paid workers while also scaring away some of the most highly educated and specialized Ph.Ds.

But hey, at least we're consistent and also make conditions horrible for natural born citizens to raise USian children!

  • and spending time thinking things through

Ah, you nailed the secret in the first sentence!

That is one huge advantage I bet you'd see in this anarchist plumbing system. The people would be self-selected to actually care about the thing they're doing.

That doesn't mean they're all going to be rational analytical thinkers tackling your problem from first principles, but it would be a big step up from how we do it now.

  • Yeah, to get a bunch of the working class to vote against their interests you need to give them somebody to look down on.

  • Me reacting to that statement 30 years ago: Yeah ok it's the Illuminati controlling the world and doing evil shit. I'll be sure to hunt them down in the future smash hit game Deus Ex.

Me reacting to that statement 30 seconds ago: fuck

  • I'm another data point where displays work under Linux better than Windows, making this particular example amusingly wrong.

This is a Dell precision laptop with a dual usb-c connected docking station. Intel cpu plus a discrete nvidia gpu.

Using Cinnamon in X11 on Linux Mint or LMDE, works great.

Using KDE Plasma in Wayland on Debian? Works great!

    Using Windows 10? Bzzzt.

I think I've had Linux DEs occasionally forget my monitor order & rotation just like Windows would, but out of the box Windows wouldn't even use all my monitors.

  • I nodded along with this comment, and then got thinking about the nation-state-military caliber funding that ICE was handed recently.

And, after a bit of mental breadth-first search of where that train of thought could have led, I was left with a frown thinking "this could get so much more bloody so quickly."

  • Ahkshually, cultures all over the world have eaten crustaceans for millennia!

(I made up that fact for the sake of the punch line, no idea if accurate)

  • Upvoting and replying in solidarity against fuuuckin' Lisandra! ✊

  • I leave ls alone and instead do

    alias l='ls -latrF'

I do sometimes just want to use the plain version, especially if I'm in a small terminal window for some reason. But I think my brain likes scanning 1D lists more than 2D grids, no matter whether I'm in a terminal or using a graphical file manager.

  • Funny timing for me.

Just the other day I was at a hangout / arcade kind of place and saw some folks playing a PS3 driving game on a CRT and ngl it looked really damn good. I was across the room so the low resolution wasn't as apparent, but the quality of motion and contrast works at any distance.

  • This is actually a great representation of the difference in culture I've seen between the US and visiting a couple places in Europe and particularly Sweden.

I don't know if actual public fruit tree orchards are a thing anywhere, but the general feel of "holy crap they can have nice things in shared spaces here" was everywhere.

  • The point isn't to keep voting for democrats because they will save us.

The point, given we are forced into a two party system, is more about trying to take over the party most of the time while also voting against the outright nazis in general elections.

  • I've been voting that way too. I question it often but haven't changed my mind yet.

I might have an issue with "vote blue no matter who" were it not for the fact that the morons around us are voting by the tens of millions FOR Nazi land!

They had the opportunity to vote for the center-right corporate-friendly administration that will probably not get much progressive stuff done because they have the same billionaire donors.

But no, they voted for the idiotic criminal self-labeled dictator THREE TIMES! They cared more about who could get hurt (LGBT, minority, female, "other") than whether we could actually improve society.

The DNC shares a ton of blame too. I don't mean to leave them out of it. I hope that some young progressive voices can drag the party to the left. It would be great to not be forced into a two party system in the first place of course, but I worry that the only way such a change will happen any time soon is that a lot of people die and then the survivors write new rules.

  • I think that's half of it. The other half is the people so disconnected and living on auto pilot that it's just a name recognition thing.

  • You don't have to think they are functionally different, or even think that the Democrat party is good on the whole, to recognize that it's better that one administration mostly worked within the spirit of the law while the other went the violent nazi route.

That doesn't even mean Obama's deportations were the right thing to do. Something can be morally wrong and strategically ill-advised and there can still be WAY worse options.

And as for the attitudes here, I don't have an argument either way. What I can definitely say is that the argument of whether you are an evil capitalist genocide supporter for voting for Biden or Harris in order to avoid the current Trump administration was all the rage in '23-'24.

edit to add: I forgot my conclusion that thanks to our right-leaning culture and flawed voting system enforcing the 2-party thing, in addition to the electoral college being biased in favor of red states, every election in this country is like the trolley problem! You can vote for somebody who is actually kinda against your values, or you can do nothing and watch Putin's plans come to fruition or whatever the hell this country is now.

  • Cool story, goog.

I'm just going to keep waiting for a linux/foss phone so that its features and capabilities are actually predictable year to year.

But maybe I'm just too picky about what features and capabilities I want. I admit I've gotten used to some pretty outlandish stuff like... lemme check my notes here... "the device does the things I tell it to do." Real galaxy-brain shit!

  • Spoken like a true trouble maker who should relinquish your home to make room for 1% of the NEXT casino parking garage!

  • It's frustrating how correct you are.

Our culture is very sick, and looking at Trump as a distilled essence of that culture is pretty dang accurate.

I think my mental state isn't really that of surprise, but still being baffled baffled at how stupid we can really be.

Don't forget that tens of millions of my neighbors voted for him THREE times.

  • I think that definition of "falling behind" is exactly the FOMO that the tech giants want to sell to all the other companies.

I think the FOMO of the tech CEOs is the same as it ever was. Money. In this case it's "What if the magic thing that makes AI dominate the economy happens and I am not leading the pack at just that moment? I might not become one of the first trillionaires! 😭"
