  • Walker suggested that American companies could collaborate with European firms to implement measures ensuring data protection.

Simultaneously, those same companies are actively lobbying the EU to dismantle those protections.

  • The more countries that join it, the more international law breaks down by diverting resources from the UN.

  • Stremio might work better if usability on a smart TV is a factor. Otherwise, sites like P-Stream (Movie-Web successor) switch between a free array of online streaming servers, or one could obtain the releases individually via torrents, usenet, or sometimes archive.org.

  • Here WeGo is proprietary and not based on OpenStreetMap, but given that it's the only option in the U.S. with live traffic data that didn't stoop to renaming the Gulf of Mexico with fascist propaganda, it's the one I've been using.

  • Clearly that's why it's called DoorDash. /s

  • Melania first then.

  • While their intentions are good, this will unfortunately probably lead to them losing their last two domain names.

feddit.org's Zionist bar problem: community ban(s) vote

  • Calling for the destruction of Israel must obviously mean you want to kill every last man, woman and child, rather than simply wanting to overthrow Netanyahu's genocidal fascist regime.

They complain of users being misinterpreted, but when those users use deliberately inflammatory language elsewhere, it's not a stretch for a moderator to then interpret messages like 'death to Israel' as calling for further violence—implicitly against civilians—and taking action based on it. Supporting the genocide against Palestine is wrong, but so is calling for retributory violence against Israeli civilians, explicitly or implicitly. Their moderation problematically confuses anti-Zionism and antisemitism at times, but it's not an action they should be blocked or defederated over.

feddit.org's Zionist bar problem: community ban(s) vote

  • With how big some of those communities are, blocking them is paramount to defederating from the instance itself in terms of losing access to posts unrelated to Israel or Zionism (a quarter of Lemmy monthly active users are subscribed to !europe@feddit.org).

Zionism should be spoken out against, but the repercussions of further Threadiverse fragmentation should also be considered. Just as troubling are extremist posts on lemmy.ml, Lemmygrad, and Hexbear. However, if their federation is maintained with the benefit of Threadiverse unity gained (with the user retaining the option of implementing their own blocks), then what amounts to partial defederation with another major instance in this case should also be avoided.

  • There should be an option to turn it all off for those who don't want to be spied on though.

Also, features like remote start could be implemented to function over a local network rather than needing to connect to the internet at all.

  • With streaming companies owning the content, buying DVDs is just another way of financially supporting the same companies for worse quality.

Even when one piracy platform is taken down, there are new ones launched in their place. Nothing guarantees that DVDs will continue to be produced in perpetuity, just as digital copies of video games are progressively becoming less and less prevalent.

  • None of the benefits existed before the EU existed. Countries economically benefit from joining the EU due to those novel benefits, but in absence of them, countries otherwise don't lose anything they had already by not joining.

  • Not interested if it's on .ml.

  • By that argument, the EU would be 'punishing' countries for not joining in the first place. EU membership comes with benefits and obligations; countries can choose to leave to avoid the obligations, but the benefits only come as a result of fulfilling them.

  • Valve is definitely the best and the most innovative, particularly in contrast to Epic's attempt to bribe their way to success and intentionally ignoring Linux, but even the best have their faults.

  • The link would embed better if you used the direct URL rather than the Google redirect.

I think making direct donations to Ukrainian charities would be better, but it doesn't seem fraudulent. If Lemmy is to have any future, we need to take a page out of Wikipedia's book and not bite the newcomers.
