  • I have heard some concerning stuff coming out of the Netherlands for a while, yes. Especially the gradual erosion of the social safety net they erected back in the 60s and the privatization of core parts of the country's public infrastructure. I'll share in your hope that this may see a reversal, or at the very least a stay under whatever new government results from these elections.

Funny you mention Scandinavian levels of taxation by the way - when I lived in the Netherlands for a few years I paid significantly more income tax than I did in Sweden. Not sure how progressive the tax system still is in the Netherlands, but it felt like all but folks on income assistance were taxed similarly.

  • While I understand the concern about these parties polling well, the old adage that "the only poll that counts are the elections" still applies. I am at least still cautiously hopeful that the Trump effect will continue to pay dividends across the rest of the world by making the majority of the electorate reconsider supporting parties styled after the MAGA movement.

  • Excuse my ignorance of the nuances of the political situation in the Netherlands, but I was under the impression that D66 are center-left liberals with some right of center economic policies. I didn't know they had similar stances on migration and foreigners as the PVV do.

  • I get what you're implying, but no it's not a big deal here in Canada either. I was just optimistic to see a stalwart alt-right staple party like Wilders' PVV suffer a quite significant election defeat.

  • I was referring to UKIP and Le Pen losing the elections, but perhaps my optimism was misplaced reading the rest of the replies.

  • Well look at that, Europe may finally be turning the page on right wing populists.

France and England rejected their alt-right parties, and with the Netherlands following suit I am hoping the Trump effect will help reset politics on the old continent back to more moderate viewpoints.

  • I think you're on to something here honestly. Windows Phone was Microsoft's last big new bet in the consumer market (you could argue Game Pass here, but the scope is more niche than a general compute platform), and I am sure that if it succeeded there would've been a significant cultural shift at Microsoft, similar to how the success (and subsequent revenue stream dominance) of iPhone/iOS did at Apple.

Sadly, we don't live in that reality, so now everything Microsoft makes (again, with exception of the aforementioned and dreadfully mismanaged Xbox/Game Pass efforts) for consumers needs to have some kind of enterprise revenue angle to get greenlit at all. From experience I can tell you that a large number of great product ideas wither on the vine at Microsoft simply because management doesn't consider anything that won't move the needle on enterprise revenue.

  • Best are probably the switches by Inovelli. That said, if you're okay installing the resistor needed to make them work, the Moesgo switches I'm using are quite decent at half the price, you just got to like or get over the styling.

  • Can you link the series? Really curious to read the rest.

  • I love these kings of threads because there's always some unknown to me gem in there. I had never heard of this game, but your comment and the glowing reviews have me sold and excited to go check it out. Thank you, kind internet stranger.

  • Don't be surprised if the answer is "both". He's a stupid man obsessed with the optics of looking strong and successful. Boasting about this while completely oblivious to the obvious consequences fits right in his M.O.

  • There are legitimate uses of the words used in the sentence, but when used in this exact format it's indeed very clearly intentionally evocative of ww2 era propaganda.

Honestly, it's pretty sad how creatively bankrupt they are that they're reusing these slogans and imagery.

  • Shocked they didn't want to gut their economy for vague assurances of unspecified protection. I really though that masterful negotiator and deal broker had them cornered. Next time he may need to throw in some shiny baubles.

  • I mean, you're not wrong but the way she got into office initially wasn't exactly a shining beacon of democratic process....

Although, in fairness, the province did reelect her after so perhaps they did want an even crazier flavour of nuts after all.

  • I think we can summarize a good 50-70% of all news coming out of Alberta as "Alberta considers continuing to be an instigator and fomenter of seditionist and extremist political views regarding the unity of our country." sigh

  • I mean the xenophobia alone allows one to draw parallels, but here's an example of the party harbouring the same wildly unscientific COVID vaccine stances and unscientific claims in their ranks: https://www.aftonbladet.se/nyheter/a/5Ey2eW/obehorig-sd-politiker-i-riksdagens-kammare

And thanks for reminding me of the existence of AfS, it truly takes something extraordinary to be too extreme for SD to the point of getting kicked out and starting your own splinter fraction.

  • You could get people to vote for a literal rock in AB, as long as it's painted blue.

  • And what makes you think that? SD (the Swedish equivalent of MAGA and the descendants of the Nazi party) pulled in over 20% of the vote last time and the right-wing parties making up the coalition have all shown to be more than willing to cater to SD's base (edit: Although, to be fair, that's also because they have a confidence and supply agreement with the SD).

  • Fine. Keep your Napolitan pizza, while I get to enjoy the wonders of focaccia and flammkuchen :D
