  • Most routers have a feature to assign static IPs to a specific MAC address. You can also tell most devices to try to take a specific IP instead of using DHCP.

There are multiple ways to set it up, but it’s very possible to set a specific device to always have the same local IP, which is usually the first step to many self-hosting scenarios.

  • Neat!

Any chance you could share some resources on how you did it? I’d kinda like to give it a try…

  • It’s still cheaper than it would have been without Amazon’s discount

  • You are correct. Here’s a thread on how CPU usage is calculated:

    https://stackoverflow.com/questions/3748136/how-is-cpu-usage-calculated

It’s basically (CPU time of the process) / (clock time), or (CPU time)/(clock time * number of hardware threads), depending on how it’s reported.

Note that there’s are some complications here, like the time “wasted” context switching or running the OS.

  • Revert it to how it was about 3 years ago, I think that’s around when it peaked.

  • she has to twitch the jack in the adapter for the thing to work

This is the downfall of all headphone jacks tbh

  • I’ve always been taught if you say “I adjust” before touching a piece then it’s ok to touch it (specifically so you can move an off-center piece into the center of its square)

  • You’re still getting an ad as the top result, just a different ad.

  • I just took a look and I think that military helicopter video just plays whenever you visit the home page. Not that it excuses the rest of it, or that the first thing you should see when you visit the White House website is a military helicopter…

  • You laugh but if you ever take a college physics class you’ll appreciate having the idea of being overly careful of your units drilled into you.

  • I’d recommend /dev/urandom instead of /dev/zero

  • It reminds me of so many subreddits where overactive mods decide they know what’s best for their subreddit and impose rules that would never pass a basic yes/no poll

I’ve been a moderator of a subreddit and had to deal with people complaining about rules that were, in fact, voted in by a poll stickied for a month.

  • The website didn’t work from US IPs last night, but it’s back already.

  • You’ll need to receive requests locally at the port your VPN assigns you for port forwarding. You’ll need to send your requests to the IP and port your VPN assigns you. The IP you tell your software to listen to might depend on the software, but 127.0.0.1 or 0.0.0.0 or localhost are all good guesses.

  • Easiest way is to add the game to be launched through Steam, and then you can use Proton.

  • Buy physical media (CDs DVDs and Blu Rays) when possible and burn your own as backups when you get stuff digitally.

Set up a computer as a Linux-based server running 24/7 with Plex or Jellyfin or similar. Even most consumer tier motherboards these days can support many sata hard drives, and you can get ones that are 10Tb+ fairly inexpensively. Set them up in RAID of some form to avoid losing data.

It’s good to have a remote backup as well but that can be expensive and more complicated.

  • I always thought that was a dumb saying because voltage is specifically what allows there to be a lethal current.

  • Nah there’s still things like mods that replace textures of walls with wireframes you can see through or mods that make enemy player skins highlighted, that can give you an advantage even if it’s only client side.
