  • In the US this is supposed to be balanced by the judicial branch, which can decide if the executive is doing a good job of enforcing the laws or not. (Not that I think the US is a good example of a balanced government, given our current state…)

Some countries have more branches of government intended to help with this problem:

  • This kind of thing can be considered a form of “checks and balances”. If one branch of the government passes a law and another branch enforces it, both branches have to agree for the law to function.

  • Media viewer and the file browser are completely different programs with different support for media file types.

Not that this is an excuse for Media Viewer to not open webp files. Also asking you to pay for h265 support is extra ridiculous.

I just use VLC for everything.

  • Glasses/contacts offer better vision, no risk, and an easy solution to your eyes continuing to change.

  • This one is supposed to work on the Switch 1

  • Cephalopod eye transplant!

I wouldn’t be surprised if the brain could figure out how to use a cephalopod style eye, especially if it was given young.

  • The server is sending me data and I’m choosing what program I’m using to interpret that data. That shouldn’t be illegal, regardless of the purposes of the data.

  • This is a nice CloudFlare ad

  • Basically.

They slowly decay as hawking radiation, but there’s nothing you can do to speed up the process.

  • I borrow $1000, assuring you I can pay you back because I have $5000 worth of stock.

A few years later, I borrow $5000, assuring you I can pay you back because I have $10000 worth of stock (it’s not more stock, it’s just worth more now). I use that $5000 to pay off the $1000 debt plus interest, and then have some left over.

Few years later, I borrow $10000, assuring you I can pay you back because I have $50,000 worth of stock. I use that $10000 to pay off the $5000 debt plus interest and then have some leftover.

Repeat as necessary. The bank does eventually get their money (when you die or are for some reason forced to sell, paying off the debt with cash rather than promises). To the bank this is an investment. To you, it’s a way to get cash without having to actually sell your stocks, avoiding taxes, and letting your value continue to skyrocket.

  • It all being done in GIMP is very thematic

  • Shelter & Shelter 2

You play as a wild lynx, and go through the whole life cycle, ending with having kittens and eventually dying.

Then you play as one of your kittens, and the cycle continues.

  • I haven’t played with it too much yet but Qwen 3 seems better than GPt-OSS

  • There are also some games with active modding communities that can be played basically forever without getting boring.

  • Hard drives are cheap and are only getting cheaper! If you are talking about proxy media, AV1 might be good for that with fast enough hardware support.

The noise synthesis thing is interesting. I have played with it, and it definitely works as advertised, but I’m not sure how I feel about relying on it.

  • I’m not really worried about the licensing of the codec I use for my personal archive. Even if I was worried, I would use h264 or VP9 before I used AV1.
