  • Cooling cycle is scifi stuff <3

In the lab I worked in, most of our [redacted to avoid doxing myself] were cooled just with the refrigeration cycle. Didn't get nearly as cold as you get with liquid hydrogen, but still cool stuff. I was a helping hand with some of the repairs, but I don't think I ever had any clue what was actually going on.

  • Would be interesting if HVAC classes included lessons on things like cooling for electron paramagnetic resonance.

  • Probably makes more sense to gay on to the furrycon. Are straights even allowed in such hallowed grounds? (no offense to straight furries intended by the comment - just not sure I've ever met a furry that wasn't at least some form of GSRM)

  • I haven't. There's some baggage with my (unfortunately masculine) given name than I'm not ready to let go of and I don't have any name I actually want.

Sometimes I change the spelling to be feminine (albeit a rare name compared to the masc form) and more similar to my mom's name (who my name was picked to rhyme with). It's a spelling I used as my character name in a Pokemon game when I chose a girl character like a decade before my egg cracked and my friend thought it was an uhh interesting choice (expressed by friendly teasing).

  • Could be something like hand size as well, since it can be harder to grip large lids.

  • That phase makes sense if you are the one to originally say something, which is imagine long-living vampires would have to deal with more than usual. Still there are RL examples like that one person who got a rejection for their paper by reviewer two who said they needed to account for the work of [insert name of the researcher who submitted the paper].

  • Also, if the garbage truck is hit by another normal car, its heavy enough to barely budge, so doing the same off a car going the same speed would still be more dangerous.

  • Unofficial IT at my work and half the time people ask for help, it suddenly works with me there and not even touching it. Granted, most of the time that's just people having typos when typing username/passwords and managing to do it correctly the 4th attempt. And sometimes it's just the computer being unusually slow to connect to wifi right after booting up and its connected by the time I walk over to check on it.

  • But I already am? Agreed it was a smoother transition than I expected and I find myself dislike windows even more pretty much immediately after. I still use it for some work-stuff unfortunately.

  • I assumed my mom would have tried to be more supportive when I first realized I was trans (until my brother brought a trans boyfriend home...) and I assumed my step-mom would have been more disapproving (even if I assumed she wouldn't express it much directly).

By the time I actually came out though, I suspected the biggest problem I'd have is I'd have to deal with my mom's dysphoria (egg?), and that turned out more true than I even expected.

  • There are some people who are homophobic, but not transphobic (which sometimes leads them to doing pressuring gay people to transition, so they're not gay). Don't think it common in the US, but it happens.

  • Congrats on the changes! You might be able to hide it a bit with just a snug undershirt+looser overshirt. But eventually proper support becomes helpful so you can run around with feeling like you need to hold your chest (which doesn't take much when they're super-sensitive). Built-in bras are at least a little less obvious what they are at a distance, but still something that catches attention if people try, say, folding your laundry or hug you with their hands right at the bands.

If you are taking spiro, make sure to hydrate well. Easy to get dehydrated even if you feel like you're drinking a lot.

  • I suspect my mom would like it if I did that.

  • Or late 2010's customs.

  • What actions of a lifetime are you (Bill, not OP) suggesting to stop ICE?

  • That's like claiming using the n-word to refer to someone of recent African decent isn't a slur because you are using the word "correctly" and that it would only be a slur if used for people who aren't black.

  • How can you watch your friends, family, and neighbours being executed in the streets only to buy a whistle and yell at them a bit. I get that you’re afraid; but at this point your desire to survive should overcome that fear… Yes, there’s the threat of Marshal law, but it’s being imposed on you whether they officially announce it or not. There are federal agents patrolling your streets arresting EVERYONE that’s not visibly white AND carrying papers, including 3yo children, and shipping them out of state faster than the courts can issue injunctions (even when moving as fast as possible with emergency hearings).

I've never seen a single ICE agent in my life (despite being in one of the top 3 states in terms of "undocumented" immigrants). So I'd imagine a lot of it is simply an "out-of-sight, out-of-mind" for a lot of people. It may be the case that Alex was the only person armed with a gun at that scene (other than ICE, if you consider those people).

You’re being kidnapped and summarily executed. This will not end until you fight it off.

Agreed. I know when things escalate, I'm certainly in the group who've they've been building lists for as someone they consider an undesirable. I consider trying to flee, but I think partly there's still a side of me that wants to believe it won't get to that point so I can just get through living day to day.

  • Yeah. I've seen it suggested on the threadiverse that it may be what happened as well. Seems like the "best case" scenario is that they killed him because they legitimately believe he was shooting them. Which is a wild belief to think the guy you are actively looking at and can see does not have a gun in-hand, is not where the sound came from, and is in no position to fire back is shooting at you instead of assuming its one of the like dozen buddies you are with that all are pointing guns at random people's faces or even a random bystander and to think firing into a crowd of your buddies is a reasonable (and to ignore that all of the top brass is actively defending the behavior, so its clearly intended behavior of ICE, not a fluke).

  • I use cli just for making virtual mics and audio sinks and for .jar, so things people who are afraid of cli probably wouldn't even consider doing. Currently using bazzite. The immutable nature make it annoying when you want to do some things via cli that don't work like they would in vanilla fedora, but that doesn't seem like it would be a problem for someone who doesn't want to use cli. Bazzite includes bazaar for accessing flatpaks and works fine usually.
