    In 2015 a biologist from Alaska told me about the ~40,000 seabirds that had all starved to death, at ground zero on his bay, in a matter of weeks. He had been studying these murres for years, and he cried as he described the horror of it all. It was the start of the 4,000,000 bird die-off, which was apparently not newsworthy. I don’t remember many conversations in my life, but this silenced alarm hit hard, because I saw that our mass extinction had arrived.
