Aside from a generally pissed-off left, most of the country is still laughing at memes and planning dinner parties with their family and friends as if it were any other time. They don't believe it can get as serious as it can get. The American public has been in a safe stasis field for 40+ years. Most people don't remember the last time they truly panicked about anything beyond rent, or why they ever would.
