  • It's the suicide reference that caught my attention too. Perhaps he was given no alternative.

  • Any sort of festive food: for example, chocolate, mince pies, etc. Lindor truffles are nice and a small box is affordable, or perhaps some Guylian chocolate seashells. If you know she's into something specific (a posh marmalade or jam, for example) you could go with that instead. It demonstrates you chose something whilst thinking of them.

Such gifts are relatively affordable, easy to share and almost always appreciated.

  • Never in a million years did I think I'd have anything positive to say about Tucker Carlson. But here we are.

  • Quite! We check the water in our tree base daily, just for the peace of mind of knowing we don't have a 7-foot firelighter in the house.

  • We have a video of my wife's mum and dad lighting the candles on the Christmas tree in 1962. It was apparently very common well into the '60s.

  • "Everyone" is a very, very high bar.

  • I'd suggest it'll only end either when you want it to, or possibly when you move out into your own place. Whenever he stays with us at Christmas, we will still fill a stocking with small gifts for our son who's nearly 30. It's not that we don't see him as an adult; it's simply a way to remember tradition and show love.

  • DARK every time. Currently on my 9th re-watch and still haven't found anything better.

  • I've just checked. Even if you've deleted your profile on Reddit, the search still identifies your posts. I don't really care as I've left the platform but I was mildly surprised.

  • What bunkyprewster said.

  • After 60+ years I don't offer generic unsolicited advice any more (I learned that lesson) but if I were going to break that rule, I'd suggest you read books. Actually read them too, don't rely on audio books, and read as widely as you can. Sci-fi, mystery, romance, historical, non-fiction, just try to read a book a month. To lose yourself in a book is one of the great ways to maintain mental health.

    Also, don't offer unsolicited advice.

  • I'm voting for Julian May (yes, she was female). Her best series of books were the Saga of Pliocene Exile and the Galactic Milieu trilogy (in 4 parts).

  • I'm in my 60s. Posting on social media mostly isn't fun any more, and I don't really want to put more money in the hands of billionnaire fascists. So Facebook, Reddit and Twitter are gone (I've had to keep Messenger as I have friends who only communicate using that platform) and I've never bothered with TikTok, Instagram or Snapchat anyway. This platform and Bluesky are the only ones left and I'm mostly a lurker anyway.

  • I'd definitely recommend it. The series is really 4 books that split the story into 2 parts: The Many Coloured Land and The Golden Torc comprise Part 1, and then Part 2 leads towards an amazing finale with The Nonborn King and The Adversary.

If you want more books from that universe, there's a link book (Intervention) that joins the Saga of Pliocene Exile to the Galactic Milieu Trilogy, comprising Jack The Bodiless, Diamond Mask and Magnificat.

  • I heard a rumour that the choice of show was between Wheel Of Time and Julian May's Saga Of Pliocene Exile (my favourite sci-fi / fantasy series). At the time I was gutted we missed out but, seeing what Amazon did with WOT, I think we dodged a bullet.

I'll try to upload a photo by Nick Dudman who was commissioned to make some artwork for the proposed SPE show (Felice at the Ship's grave).

  • You have mites living in your eyelashes.
