  • IMO, it hasn’t aged well movie-wise, which I think obscures its overall message. But it’s possible that as I was a child when it came out, I conflate it with Inconvenient Truth and the South Park interpretations enough to poison the well for all lol

  • Yeeeeaaaaahhhhhh. It’s a real result of the times. My friends (who I’ve known since grade school) like to remind me of my ‘edgy’ anti climate-change phase as a pre-tween lmao. I’m now over a decade into a climate science career 😭 lol

  • Hey now I’ve tried my HARDEST to pass as queer-coded. I’ve been KIND, SELFLESS, and have VERY CUTE AMBIGUOUS TATTOOS. But guys are such an ick to me lmao.

  • For sure, hindsight is 20/20, the alarmism is there, but the backing logic makes it seem dated and easy to poke holes in.

But yeah- it’s disaster schlock- the actuality wouldn’t make for good television , a bit too depressing

  • Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhgggggggghhbbhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1!

I love them both so much.

  • While President Petro is not wrong, I do have to ding him on a technicality…

I believe the applicable style guide would correct this to:

    “KKKlan of pedophileSS”

    Rating: One very small Pinocchio

  • Students reading about this in the future

The US empire fractured along ideological lines among those in power between those favoring permanent pedophilia vs those favoring pedophilia in one country. The leading theorist of permanent pedophilia, Jeffery Epstein, stressed the importance of pedophilia in “backward” nations in supporting the pedophile revolution. This clashed with his intellectual counterpart, Donald Trump’s, nationalist focus with a bent towards developing a strong domestic pedophile class, including both the jet ski dealership owner class and the willful rubes. This schism eventually led to Epstein’s early demise, and despite Trump’s t-shirt “I have no connection to Jeffery’s suicide, wink, now stop asking questions” many still have questions.

  • Was going to post about needing to have a thorough understanding of it oneself, and how that enables one to identify areas where there’s overlap with the subject’s areas of interest and theory which relates to that. But then I remembered the last time I did that for a group which I secretary, about half of the people looked at the books with interest, and half I heard chuckling about me putting out recommended reads. So in conclusion, I guess one’s gotta have thick skin and if it matters enough, badger/bully a bit in the way most appropriate.

  • Oh and on this note I recently saw a youth photography exhibit at the state fair which I thought was incredible. It was a submission of 5 photos per person and it was divided by age/school year (<5yo, 1st grade, etc). It was just fascinating to see how the subject matter of the photos changed with the age. The <5yo ones were so abstract, and literally from a different point of view than I’ve seen in a while. As the submitters got older, the photos captured more realism, but still maintained a sense of curiosity/innocence in their choice of subjects and how they portrayed that (read - lots of great pet photos).

Anyway- that’s my plug for digital photography. I took a bunch of dogshit photos growing up with a disposable camera and no sense of lighting (and was limited to ~30 pics); but it’s cool to see how the technological improvements remove that barrier to entry to the art form, and remarkable to see the work that springs from that. Also the dogshit photos I took still bring me back to hanging out with cousins I haven’t seen in decades in a farmhouse that’s long been replaced with a subdivision; so even if they’re low quality, it’s all in the eye of the beholder

  • I typically say it’s 90% being able to find and appreciate beauty, and 10% recreating that without making it look shit. (Which is why I find it very useful for combating depression!)

(But also- unless you’re getting paid - it should be about capturing how a sight made you feel. So if smashing that mothafuckin saturation knob gets you there - go for it! It’s artistic expression)

  • Too much sea for their decks is a fantastic book about Lake Superior wrecks (including eddy fitz). After reading it though I couldn’t imagine being an old-school longshoreman. So much difficulty in navigation, reading weather, and the tech was developing too. I forget which ship, but it was one of the first with a metal hull and they didn’t account enough for the rigidity wrt length, and it just sheared the rivets when it spanned across two waves. Superior is wild enough weather wise with all the modern tech, so it baffles me that it was traversed in so many different waves.

Anyway - will be drinking one down for the good ship and crew, a bone to be chewed, when the winds of November came early

  • Couldn’t imagine trying to build a coalition within any of the US political bodies. Obviously the intent is moreso for spectacle while the real work is done with more discretion; but if everyone are blatant, self-serving opportunists (on one’s “team” or the “other”) how do they anticipate even keeping up the charade?

  • The one (soft power) is designed to hide incompetence/intent in the other (threats of violence). With soft power accepting the implicit threat of violence as a part of the ecosystem and utilizing it as a backstop against straying “outside the lines”, it’s then able to shape outcomes within its defined realm.

If the threat of violence is identified as non-existent, then there’s nothing to keep things within capitals preferred realm. And soft power is just that, soft, and falls apart when trying to fulfill imperial ambitions without that threat.

Soft power via collaboration building is a bit different, since it’s shaped around a collectively formed goal rather than enforcing that of a single entity. Moreso carrot than stick. The US has been applying so much austerity that they’ve discarded both the carrot and the stick in (imo) the hopes that society is too atomized to notice; but one does catch on when contradictions heighten enough.

  • I like Team Cave as a moniker for the dems, but I imagine for different reasons than Josh Marshall

Also what is a Josh Marshall? Is that one who makes sure the demands of the council of joshes are executed?

  • What a waste of letters to write that out lol

  • Hmmm it’s no Ram Ranch
