  • Yeah everyone else in the thread are making my point in a clearer fashion. Also I (embarrassingly) had to look up what a MOBA is lol. I stopped gaming around when LoL was getting popular, and before that was a terrible FPS player.

Now that I’m finding more time to play, I’m more drawn to retro games (GB roms) or story driven games (e.g. Gone Home) over those with incredible graphics, competition, high difficulty, etc. Which are games I consider “fun”; compared to so many other modern releases which feel more like cash-grabbing rooted in posturing (or vice versa).

  • Thank you for sharing your trauma. I’m in the process of learning to accept help, and trying to escape the cycle of similar feelings (realizing how deeply that “work ethic over self worth” has impacted multiple generations of my predecessors.)

An aside - for what it’s worth - I really enjoy seeing your art. As a vibes-based art enthusiast it really hits the spot. I think it’s how you compose the environment around the subject - the brush styles really complement the emotions

  • Wait. People want gaming to be an enjoyable experience? Like overall?

  • Yeah I’ll try that for sure. ROMs are incredible. Trying almost literally every game that sounds appealing lol

  • Falling hard for jrpgs - recently got a pocket emulator for my commute - and got into tactics ogre/ffta, and now FFV. Honestly you all are missing out on not being isolated from gaming until later in life :p

  • This social species can be quite vocal with a nasal, staccato, yelping "kek...kek...kek..."

  • Marjorie Taking Greens (seriously - respect the rotation 😠)

  • It’d really own everyone if they erased the nuclear family next 🙏

  • I eat the shells too occasionally (peanut and sunflower), and the boiled peanuts are a popular way to add some flavors and soften you the shell too - makes it even better imo

  • Are you familiar with boiled peanuts?

  • Second this - flavor bible series is incredible

  • Is it currently hot or cold there?

  • Sweet no one’s said my answer verbatim yet.

Essentially - competition, scarcity and precariousness in the US have degraded social ties and atomized the population. This hampers organization which poses a threat to capital, but supports that which props up its existence. This continues the civic mythology cycle which asserts as long as one quietly plays their role, they will benefit from the fruits of the imperial project.

The ‘purpose of a system is what it does’ - and it’s the US humming along as intended, as the vanguard state of laissez-faire capitalism.

False scarcity and precariousness have long been utilized to get the most out of workers under capitalism. Not cooperation to build towards a common goal, but competition so one is not be outran to their individual goal.

I think this is primarily intra-class competition with the intent further alienating one from their otherwise peers. It’s also been important to sub-divide the classes along other racial/national/ideological lines to prevent coalition building within one’s class.

As a result, the stress of competition is turned inward to one’s class, rather than critically examining the relationship to the owning classes-which take 90% of the wealth, or the oppressed classes - who the “middle class” extracts wealth from (or rather receives the trickle the owners allow, but to the same effect.)

There’s a threat of isolation if one falls outside of their atomized in-group for whatever reason. And thus groups atomized via competition/scarcity/precarity are receptive to propaganda which supports their cause. And while that’s looked different at different snapshots in time, the systems end state has remained relatively the same.

That being: We must secure the existence of our people and a future for [global capital].

But dressed up as: We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children* (*latest acceptable in-group as determined by ROI).

So basically Americans are trained to be as docile of employees as possible, or risk undoing generations of work to claw their way from poverty, while not questioning where that money comes from or where it goes.

However as the contradictions of capital accumulation heighten (a phenomenon someone should write about) it becomes more difficult to buy into the system and more people begin looking past their blinders and expanding their in-group (first organizing steps). This is a threat to capital so these movements are often co-opted asap. This allows some venting of ‘revolutionary’ energy, but is ultimately still serves capital through alienation and prevents supporting an international movement, as both still separate out-groups.

‘Revolutionary’ energy directed towards international liberation is the biggest threat to capital, and what most of its resources work to quash.

So within the population, ‘revolutionary’ energy is spent:

    • at work trying to outcompete others
    • to causes capital supports, which do nothing
    • to causes which oppose capital, which capital opposes in turn
    • hopeless wallowing

I think between all of those, there aren’t enough hopeless people with enough energy to do so. Meanwhile hopeful people dump their energy into trying to advance against capital.

Idk I should stop now this really got longer than intended lol.

  • Had this same exchange with a friend and their response was “what’s that?” So yeah

  • We’re all parasocial enough here to know I’ll be asleep within the first 15 minutes of a movie anyway 😴

  • Never heard of that one somehow - gonna add it to the ol list though
