  • Thrift thrift thrift. The old stuff is higher quality than the new stuff (if maintained), and the new stuff is v expensive. For instance I live where it’s cold AF and thrifted a parka for $30 that needed a good wash, but would otherwise be $300. Just go for cost and utility, and if someone compliments it be super aloof about its origins, because of how little you care. “Oh this thing? Yeah I just got it to prep for hiking k2 (smoking k2).”

  • At one point my grandfather tracked our earliest ancestors as being of the Seneca band and a settler who ran away together. He apparently corroborated the story with another genealogy enthusiast (and apparent distant relative) who also traced their family to that common pairing. That said, even if we’d probably be considered something along the lines of Métis in Canada, my family have experienced a very different history than those actually claiming tribal memberships and Indigeneity. So even if I 100% believed it, I wouldn’t (as a white person who works closely with Indigenous communities) feel at all comfortable claiming the mantle of the persecuted while enjoying the comforts of the persecutor; and people that do so (esp. without any proper consultation with the band they claim membership to) come off as very insincere - and often do not have much of an idea/relationship to what indigineity means. Claiming so demands much more introspection than simply saying the words
