Thinking of future posibilities (plural) is useful but always remember it is impossible to predict the future.
A slide towards bad things can indeed bring about abject horror or a quick turnaround towards good. As the contradictions intensify there may be a catastrophic collapse but that may be looked back as the best thing that could have happened as it prevented WW3.
It is impossible to know, right now there're millions who live in what you could call catastrophic conditions. Imagine living in Eurasia during 1943, if those people maintained hope and camarederie we can as well.
