  • Yes? But that's already explicitly warned about.

At work I had to fill out a form which threats to my health could impact me. Next to chemicals or radiation, working at a desk for more than x hours a day was also listed as a potential source of bodily harm.

  • A basic image is really easy. It's basically just

    Dockerfile

FROM debian # start with a minimal Linux system. There are probably better options than debian. Some images are made especially for docker (i.e. very minimal and light weight).
RUN apt install dependencies # do what ever you need to get your app running.
RUN echo "options and stuff" >> /etc/a/config/file # you can also edit system files
COPY . /app # copy your project into the docker container.
EXPOSE 8080 # doesn't actually do anything, but documents where the app will be listening
CMD server-binary run /app/main.php # I have actually no idea how php server stuff works

    (Docs https://docs.docker.com/reference/dockerfile/)

Then people can run your project with docker.

Edit: checking the readme some small changes would be required. Config.php should read in environment variables and the DB init SQL should be run automatically somehow.

  • Thanks, It actually does, because the conversation factor is easy.

    2e27 Å2 = 2e7 m2 = 20 km2

So an area 5km by 4km. You can now easily compare it to the size of your neighborhood, town or city.

  • The example is wrong, because they used 1.0.

But in general x-x does not have to equal 0, that is true. I'm pretty sure Nan and infinity would yield not 0.0, but Nan instead.

    And if you reach x with two different calculations, e.g. x1 = a - b - c and x2 = a - c - b it is certainly not guaranteed that x1 - x2 == 0.0

  • Are you sure? I've never seen that inequality before.

Edit: and at least python agrees with me

            print(0.1 + 0.2) # 0.300...0004
        print(1.0-1.0) # 0.0

  • Whenever I read Mötley Crüe I have to think of this:

When we finally went to Germany, the crowds were chanting, “Mutley Cruh! Mutley Cruh! “ We couldn’t figure out why the fuck they were doing that.

  • Why do new crimes need to be invented?

This is not at all what they are saying. Such a new law would not introduce a new crime, but be an amendment to the university's rules so that they are allowed to expel students who committed certain crimes before.

  • For what it's worth 2 out of 3 subway lines are already fully automated. They started in 2008.

Trams have the same issues as self driving cars though: you need to 100% reliably detect people in front of the carriage. And you can easily find tests with Teslas which just run over a child sized doll because they didn't detect it properly. The tech is just not there yet.

  • For example, how do you travel to another city?

Train or car. Car free mostly refers to inner city trips, for special occasions it's totally fine to use a car (e.g. moving, buying something big, a weekend trip, etc)

What do you do if the city has high slopes making walking and biking too hard?

Bus, ebikes, other types of electric assist stuff, walking. Crazy steep slopes do put a limit on exclusively human powered mobility (i.e. walking and cycling), but those places are incredibly rare.

Or how do elders deal with what other citizens would take for granted in terms of mobility?

A walkable city features amenities close by, plenty of benches to rest, and a solid bus system. There are absolutely no issues for people with restricted mobility. This applies to people with disabilities as well btw.

In fact I would turn that question around: how do elders deal with the requirement to drive a car to get groceries, etc? Isn't that like super duper dangerous?

  • Touristi ite domum

  • Jup, but that was only relevant on iOS, never for MacOS. Also the digital markets act will end even that.

For example you can make and receive calls on your computer instead of your phone when you are working on your PC. That is unmatched by any other ecosystem.

Edit: for the time and effort you need to put in to make it work. Yes, you can do it with anything. Linux and pine phone will for sure be capable - but no normal person will do that. Because it takes a ton of effort. Apple supports that out of the box and because everything is linked to a single ID it just works.

  • Their integration is the best you can get.

You need to buy an expensive phone, watch, computer (would you like to spend another thousand bucks for a monitorstand?) to take advantage of it, which is why I don't have and don't want anything apple. But if you have that, their software stack is superb.

  • In English, not in general. The continent is called America in lots of languages, but the country is most often referred to as the USA. Because that's the title the country has chosen for itself.

  • I don't know, I'm just saying there could be actual reasons for it and it's not a bad thing per se.

Edit: the article says the justification is

helping to improve communication between the citizens and the authorities of the two countries

There are a ton of Chinese speakers. I can imagine small tourist spots getting overwhelmed during Chinese school holidays. Having translators with some authority can greatly increase crowd control.

  • In this particular case it was less about higher standards and more about not listening to local law enforcement.

  • The German military is not allowed to act inside the country. Only exception is natural disaster relief. We have special police forces for high stakes situations like terrorist attacks.

But when there is a fight between 20 well trained soldiers who just don't give a fuck, what is the police supposed to do? Besides, the army police has more leverage and can influence the soldiers career and stuff as well.

It's not an ideal solution. Having a foreign entity project power - yikes! (even if it is just for their own subjects) but it's a solution.

  • Sketchy af, but my opinion will depend alot on what exactly will be done.

In certain places in Germany (e.g. Nürnberg train station) the US military police is patrolling (or used to patrol) together with regular German police, because there have been incidents in the past of US army personnel not listening to german police.

  • Hold up, I think we have a discrepancy regarding what we are talking about.

I'm not thinking of anything user facing. The ux would be exactly identical to what is publicly observable on reddit already. I'm talking about the possibility to dump any change to comments or posts into a cold data store for later analysis. We don't have to question or think how many users would make use of it, we can count the fraction of comments with an "edited" label on reddit.
